Passed away Tuesday at age 75 from cancer. Played with Cannonball Adderly and Weather Report and is best remembered for his composition, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." He was the inspiration for many jazz pianists from the 60's, 70's, and 80's, most notably Herbie Hancock.

This is the first I've heard of his passing... a sad day for jazz fans and all musicians who dedicate themselves wholly to their art; Zawinul had a specific genius for composition, for performance, and was incredibly passionate about his craft. I love the stuff he turned out with Weather Report, especially his collaborations with Wayne Shorter. He'll be missed as his music lives on.

Wow. I'm shocked. I was just listening to weather reports, 'Three Clowns' today.

Sigh. Mercy Mercy Mercy is one of my all time favorites. Simple but soulful.
