View Full Version : When Soundwaves clash

Hi, I remember seeing something on this, but can't find it.
I am using GPO Finale and Kontakt. Sometimes, the sounds' waveforms seem to interact with one another in a way that produces a nasty chirping/buzzing sound. I don't know the words for this but the phrases out-of-phase, phase-shift come to mind for some reason. Can one of the tech gurus here recommend what I can tweak to avoid this? (And as far as Kontakt goes, make like I'm a rank beginner, because I am!)
Help Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez????????????????:o

Hi Karen -
Not sure if this is your problem, but if you play unison notes with the same instrument, they can be out-of-phase and either cancel or boost the signal too much. For example, are you using 2 flutes and using the same GPO instrument for both of them?
You could try using one of the "Plr" instruments (used to be called "Ens").
Otherwise, could you give us more info about when this occurs and when it doesn't?

Hi klassical, thanks for responding.
I wasn't using the same patch twice (unless having a double stop (divisi) on one stave (and therefore the same channel and same patch) counts??), and I have plenty of memory (3GB) so those werent causing it. But I did find a fix -- I think it was on the Finale website (?) -- for cases where the above two are not the case... sounds strange -- but I went into the Ambience settings and bumped Quality/CPU down to 10% and this fixed the problem for the most part (occasional random glitches, but not often). Why, I don't know.
Thanks again for responding, "k" :-), much appreciated.

"divisi" could be the guilty party here.
If you use doubled instruments that occasionally play the same note, you MUST use the "ensemble" samples, never the solo. (eg. violin plr1 / violin plr2 instead of two Violin Solo's(*))
(*)EDIT: I mean two same type violin solos, like two Stradivaris

Hi thanks Matt (Aziraphal).
I was indeed using the ensemble samples, but I'll keep in mind what you said. So much to learn!
Thanks Matt, wishing you all good things!
