I'm very disappointed. I clicked on this thread expecting to see a violin playing a robot, as the title suggests. Instead, it seems to be the reverse! :p

Is it just me, or does giving robots musical abilities seem like a bad idea? Are we looking at a Terminator-style rebellion here to replace live musicians?

A few years ago there was the robot trumpeter:

Then there was the robot percussionist:

Then the Robot playing sax:

The robot guitar tuner:

And now the robot violinist:

We know that the robots are growing in strength. Confrontation is inevitable. The musical robots could be deploying secret weapons systems and temperaments as we post. Robots also have "superhuman" abilities such as the ability to perform some of the Listening Room's works with ease.

For the sake of the survival of musicians, something must be done!

Well, just make "Garritan Robotical Orchestra" Sample Library, and they will forget forever the real instruments!!! :p

Hey! I know that guy! Doesn't he work for the "Soulless Strings?" Anyway I've heard him perform many many times. This guy is everywhere from elevators to grocery stores!:D

Well. I don't think he looks very realistic, they messed up on his eyes or something.

So i gave him a makeover to fix all that.

If robots can play instruments, maybe we can build even more robots and send them to concerts as listeners?

Ummm - now what were the Three Laws of Robotics?

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

A robot must obey his parents.

A robot must be TRUSTWORTHY, LOYAL, HELPFUL, FRIENDLY, COURTEOUS, KIND, OBEDIENT, CHEERFUL, THRIFTY, BRAVE, CLEAN, REVERENT, and Promise to do his best To do his duty to God and country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. Be Prepared and Do a Good Turn Daily.

Hmmm. if I read that right - I am going to have to change my patch from Scoutmaster to Robotmaster.

Strange--this robot has no ears, so it can't hear the music plays. (In fact, those logense-shaped things across the ear cavity could be ear muffs.) And no nose or mouth. Just those eyes that look as though the intent was to recreate an old scifi movie alien mock-up. Which admitedly probably has more commericial appeal than the aliens of Sigourney Weaver.

And notice that the prototype is white. No word on the gender, but it doesn't have breasts. So the first one off the production line is a white, overweight ,male robot that can't hear, speak, or smell, but plays the violin. With feeling.

Remember the recent book arguing that one day people will marry robots? I'm not sure this is the model that will turn people towards the idea.
