Word of the Week: WOOLGATHERING
etLux was the inspiration of our new word for the week:
WOOLGATHERING
Pronunced: \WOOL-gath-(uh)-rin
Woolgathering means:
Indulgence in idle daydreaming.
Recently, I was woolgathering while listening to etLux's "A Delectation of Woolgathering" and thought about what an interesting word that is (delectation is also). You can hear A DELECTATION OF WOOLGATHERING For Symphony Orchestra at www.DavidSosnowski.com (http://www.DavidSosnowski.com) and forum post about it here (http://northernsounds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48189).
Woolgathering derives from the literal sense, "gathering fragments of wool."
Recently in the news Madona has outraged animal rights groups for colorful woolgathering by dying her sheep.

With a Scottish husband perhaps she should have tried a tartan motif, maybe a warring clans theme.

There once was a shepherd whose blathering
Put all of his sheep in a lathering.
His comments were lewd,
But his words misconstrued
By his flock (but he just was woolgathering).

Very cool word, i use it all the time. I like to say "why so much woolgathering?" and "what in the heck are you going to do with all those fragments?"

I don't see why they are upset, they are probably just jealous.

Once again you're attempting to pull the "wool over our eyes!";) :wow:
I thought woolgathering had something to do with what I collect in my bellybutton every evening.
I learn something new every day!

This Forum is so educational - Before this, I had no idea that the proper pronunciation was "woolgatheriN" (no ending G). :p
"...WOOLGATHERING
Pronunced: \WOOL-gath-(uh)-rin..."
Thanks for the info, Gary G!

They were going to call it "People whose occupation is standing on the side of the highway near a construction site and holding a sign that says SLOW" but that was too long. Or Composing, on a bad day.

While gathering wool
I didst come across
A gathering of wool gatherers
'Twas hard to tell what was being gathered
Whether woolgatherers gathering wool
Or wool gathering woolgatherers
'Twas a woolly problem it 'twas
And try as I might
Though the problem I did attempt to solve
My thoughts refused to be gathered
Unlike the gathering of woolgatherers gathering wool
Or the wool gathering woolgatherers.

How much wool could a woolgather(er) gather, if a woolgather(er) could gather wool?
