Predictions for 2008

http://www.garritan.com/images/ggpredicts2008.jpg

In chat on Sunday we were discussing what may be ahead and thought it would be a good idea to post some predictions for 2008.

The past year has been a doozy - but what about the next 12 months? Let me look into my trusty crystal ball as I go into a deep trance and spew forth my predictions:

The World at Large:

There will be technological advances and also continued war and strife, earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanoes. And uncertain and economic conditions lie ahead will cause trepidation and...

Wait.....that happens every year! So let's focus on the community, music and technology...

Technology Trends that will Impact Music:
Flash Drives will replace hard drives. 2008 will bring solid-state hard drives (based on flash memory instead of the usual spinning disc disks). Now available in some notebooks (Eee) they will enter the mainstream in a big way. Faster, lower resource, and more stable drives for your samples!

Lower Prices for Hardware. There will be lower price points in computers. We are seeing $198 computers at Wal-mart and inexpensive offerings at Dell and elsewhere.

USB 3 and Firewire S3200. USB 3.0 will deliver more than ten times the speed of the existing USB 2.0 standard. Firewire is also upping the ante. This will trickle down into a whole host of DAW and music apps (perhaps moreso in 2009)

Windows-Mac-Linux. Mac and Linux market share will continue to rise. Windows users will finally start switching to Vista as the troubled OS becomes usable (with SP1 and moreso with SP2). Because Linux is free, it may become a preferred operating system for low-end computers and mobile/custom devices.

Displays. Multi-touch displays (like iPhone and MS Surface) will make their way to the music world. Mixing apps with multi-touch faders and truly virtual instruments (that can be played on the display) will make appearances.

Music Education. The world will rethink the entire gamut of education. Interactive lessons and community-based learning, (like the Rimsky-Korsakov and Jazz Arranging course on the forum), the OLPC program, real-time learning over the net, distributed learning, interactive discussions in chat, etc. - is revolutionizing music learning. Learning will continue to make the leap from location-based to internet-based and expect to see more music courses online.

Ultra Mobile Computers. Personal Computers are getting smaller. Laptops have already come into vogue. Now we'll see a plethora of ultra-mobiles and mobile devices (like the iPhone and Eee) grow in popularity. Sampling and software instruments will eventurally migrate to these devices. Mobile web usage will become ubiquitous and standard. We'll be more and more connected but untethered from the old beige box computers.

Print. People will increasing get their information online. Print media and magazines will face increasingly difficult times ahead.

Music Industry. 2008 will likely bring more woe for the major record labels. Sales of CDs will continue to plummet as online music is now the primary way music is distributed. The RIAA may have made things worse for the industry. More and more artists will bypass record labels entirely and look for big acts to go entirely independent.
Sampling in the Year(s) Ahead:
Hybrid Intelligent Performance-based Instruments (HIPIs). We'll see more performance-based instruments using smaller footprints and more programming. Performance-based instruments (like the Strad, Gofriller, and JABB instruments) will become more common. Hybrid sampling/modeling will become more prevalent and sample pools shrink as you will do much more with far less samples. Developers will implement more midi performance routines, instrument body resonances, synthesis, modeling and DSP into their instruments. Synthesis and modeling like WIVI and Synful will only get better and you'll see more synth based instruments (as other companies are actively working on this). Customized software instruments with better algorithmic modeling and more musical intelligence will set hyper-real standards. The HIPI movement is alive and well in 2008!

Downloadable content. It is becoming increasingly common to download gigabytes galore from the net. We will see more sample products being offered as downloads (like the Garritan Reason Refill, Worra DirectDownloads and Sonivox downloadable instruments in 2007). Most sample developers will eventually offer downloadable content. No longer limited by geographical and shipping considerations, you will be able to buy your sounds and be up an running minutes thereafter.

Copy Protection. A new type of copy protection will appear that is easy, intuitive and doesn't give users a bad experience or treat them like criminals.

Musical Chairs in the Sample Industry - More Choices and Lower Prices. Music companies will most likely consolidate, shuffle and re-align. There will be no standardization of sampling platforms in the coming year. If anything, the industry will continue to splinter and fracture as existing sample platforms loose ground and become less relevant. The host application (sequencer/notation/etc) will become the important platform and samples/samplers will serve (and be better integrated with) the hosts. Notation programs will become more like sequencers, and vice versa. And almost every sequencer will integrate its own bundled dedicated sampler (like Cubase/Halion, DP/Mach5, Logic/EXS, Cakewalk/Dimension, etc) and we'll see more "free" samplers (like Structure Free, Independence Free, Satellite Free, etc).

Expect to see more sample libraries and software instruments. Many new libraries will be released in 2008 and this will saturate the already crowded market. Intense competition and an uncertain economy will exert downward pressure on prices. This will be good for musicians. Developers who innovate will continue to thrive.

New-fangled Controllers. We'll begin to see new controllers as software instruments get tactile and human interaction gets better. The bottle-neck in realism is no longer in the samples but in the limitations of input and human control. We'll see more affordable wind controllers, percussion, and controllers (like the Zen drum and Tenori). Keyboard controllers will improve bringing expression to the next level. Wii, Rock Band and Guitar Hero show us what could be done on a consumer level. New types of musical instrument controllers and integrated programming will push the envelope in terms of how we humans interact with samples and allow player immersion in new ways. Sample developers will develop for these new breed of instruments. High Definition MIDI will also finalize and companies will begin designing products for it (e.g. us).

Expect things coming from left field - some really interesting stuff that we'll all be in awe of. It's going to get wild and crazy.
What are your predictions?

Now it's time for you to tell us your predictions for 2008.

A Happy 2008 to all.

Nice spoken, Gary. I sincerely hope nothing comes true in 2008, but somewhere in 2010. Why? With all changes in hardware, software, I don't have time to learn how to deal with them.

Once I asked in a Phoneshop "can I call somebody with this phone?" and the salesman looked at me if I came from Mars. This phone could receive Internet, had games on it, some camera, agenda, ringtones downloader, video film (a couple of seconds), chat functions, .... and finally the one thing I wanted "a phone function". I didn't buy this thing.

Technology is going too fast. And the software can't keep up. It is rather stupid that we have to "program" CC's to make the Strad sing, just an example. I just got used to KP1 and now I have to deal with KP2 and next with Aria and next with ...... and all within the birth of one larger piece of music. This is driving me crazy.

I really want some genuine user friendly systems, based on the practice of musicians. Now it is based on the skills of the bunch of programmers. As always, my adagio is, that the larger the manual the unfriendler the program (or gadget) is.

Even the fact that you name Mac, Windows, Linux in one sentence gives me the creeps. A new OS, like McWinux?

My hopes for the next year is that you launch the Steinway, the improved GPO, the ARIA player, that reverb gadget you had in mind and then keep still for the next couple of years, to give me some pace.

And a real prediction for 2008? I really don't know what to choose. I hope some real achievement in fighting Cancer, killer number one in this world.

But, don't forget, I admire your achievements, so forgive me,

Raymond

Now you are right old "wise one" all this turns me on my head too, what's a thumb drive? I flashed my drive once, but it didn't get excited... I heard you could fire a wire once and I don't think Mr. Turner ever Firedwire... Depending on the site I go to I touch my screen a lot...
And I am really waiting to be enlightened in the ways of a chicken Oh Wise One...

Happy New Year All - May we at least be blessed with more of the great offerings that are found on this forum.

Raymond,

How true your words ring.

Some people want more and more functionality. But it can overwhelm. Technology should serve up simplicity. The iPod is so successful, in part, because it's just so simple.

One of the reasons we designed our own player was to uncomplicate things. We hope ARIA will be a much simpler, straightforward and intuitive. The user experience is our top priority and we'll do our best to make things as simple and easy as we can.

Happy holidays,

Gary

The blue states will finally secede. The neighboring red states will join them one year later. Prosperity will reign supreme for the blue states. Mexico will take Texas. I will enroll in a film school in either Portland or Seattle, whichever one offers the best financial aid package.

Then I will proceed to direct a full-length feature film in my home town of New York City. My film will win Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Soundtrack etc., but I will fail to win Best Director. When the Best Director is announced, Ang Lee will yell at me from the balcony "HEY VIRGIN BOY, WHO'S THE CRYBABY NOW?!! HA HA HA HA HA!!!" He'll be drunk, of course.

How about The Netherlands. I always regretted that in the very past, we told the Spanish (with the Duke of Alba, King Philips II, etc.) to go back to their own territory. We also did with the Germans (Kaiser Hupsakee), Austrians, Romans (Julius Caesar). This was the chance to get an multi-lingual education, but no, we had to maintain our own identity.

Now we have to learn French, English, German, Spanish all over again.

So, if you wish invite the Mexx's to take over Holland.

I doubt we'll see any big improvements in physical modelling/synthesis instruments until after the current patents expire. That could be a long time yet, but who knows?

I know WIVI is forging ahead, with the saxes, possibly more woodwind and brass, and (maybe) bowed instruments coming out in 2008.

Sample libraries are going the way of the dodo, they are become obsolete and I would never buy one again. Unless it's for percussion, but even then I'm reluctant, as physical modelling of drums is possible with the high powered PCs of today.

Two words. WAVEGUIDES and PATENTS.

After countless requests from consumers and computer compaines, Apple will give in and decide to release Mac OS X for any computer (PC or MAC), and Apple will gain billions in software sales, and take the place of dominance currently held by Microsoft.

Definatly a wish, but I could see it happening farther in the future, with Mac OS XIV.

:) This is a fantastic post, Gary! Very insightful; much to ponder and anticipate. It seems a good one to keep going as the New Year approaches.

Here are my predictions:

---1. The New Garritan Steinway, ARIA player, and other developments will take the music world by storm, instigating a whole new era of creative expression.

Gary will indeed become the first in the industry to reach billionaire status, which he well deserves. This will enable him to do great charitable works for starving but worthy composers.

In a world at war overrun by greed and political corruption, this shall stand as a shining example of the triumph of the good. )(~

*******************

---2. Saraswati will learn how to post music in the forum and to be on her first chat. The music will first elicit just kindly suggestions, but as her skills improve, it will eventually be capable of inducing states of ecstatic euphoria in enthusiastic listeners. Scientific and humanitarian organizations worldwide will come to recommend it as a panacea for all that ails us. :D Early in '08, she will prepare for this by undertaking the Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration course, with the help of GPO.

As Gary hinted, Saraswati will indeed become a wise and venerable sage, starting--well, not quite yet, but soon! Unfortunately, she is the only one who will be aware of it. ;) On the other hand, the great seer and visionary known here as etLux will make waves as he continues to transcend time and space. :wow:

********************

---3. As the word spreads, greater numbers of musicians will be drawn to this forum. All who participate will benefit, including developers. Young and old, men and women, people of diverse backgrounds and cultures will gather peacefully to learn from each other, share some great music, and enjoy some good laughs! :|:

At CES, a version of USB 3.0, made a small appearance. The public had an opportunity to see what the new connectors and sockets look like (http://go.theregister.com/feed/www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/09/ces_usb_3_revealed/). According to the Register, it does handle backward compatibility. The extra pins for USB 3.0 "are placed behind the USB 1.1/2.0 ones. USB 3.0 connectors and receptacles will be deeper than the current ones."

Hi Gary

I read about USB 3.0 about a week ago. I immediately started thinking about planning an upgrade to 64 bit computing. A 64 bit OS combined with the right processor(s) and other ancillaries shoud prove a worthy upgrade.

It seems evident that with nearly 5Gb/sec dataflow, there will need to be some serious amounts of RAM being used by the computer. As yet only 64 bit computing (in the Windows world) offers access to large amounts of RAM.

I would think that the whole music industry will move audio connections towards USB 3.0

Now if we could have a 64 bit version of GPO :) AND maybe Garritan Rock And Blues ???

Go on, you know it makes sense ;)

I already asked about the 64 bit version in another thread.

My prediction:

Like with former predictions of all sorts, some will apply, some not.

The "predictors" will claim their wisdom and inspiration pointing at the trivial and random sample of predictions that really became true.

Due to the basic phenomenon in human perception, that we cannot perceive NON-events, the predictions that do not become true will NOT be taken into account.

Love to all of you :... my prediction: Most things will take longer to mature than expected.

BTw: I am a big garritan fan. Have GPO, now ordered JABB... both will remain two of my favourite purchases relating to music.
