I just picked up the score and CD (Chicago Symphony Orch--love that brass section!) to Mahler\'s 9th symphony. Lord what a beautiful piece of music that is...it nearly brought me to tears. It\'s been a long time since I\'ve heard music that gorgeous. It\'s going to take me quite a while to get a handle on that score.
I also checked out Boulez\' \"sir incises\"...wow. I\'d love to hear that live!
Anybody else listening/studying anything breathtaking?

Mahler\'s music is incredible. Bar none IMO. He was simply a genius in every aspects of the art of orchestral music. Truely magnificent! Words cannot express the greatness of his compositions. Have fun reading and studying the score. I have his 1-5th symphony scores and various recordings of each. Just the other day I was reading some of the 4th in bed, while my girlfriend was reading some Danielle Steel http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif Needless to say she thinks I\'m crazy.
Anyway if you can, buy Mahler\'s 10th (and unfinished) with the berliner philarmonics. It\'s awesome.

My favorite has always been the 2nd - its like hearing a film and a book at once, only much more! It\'s sort of the apocalypse in tonal setting. Don\'t think I\'ve heard much of the 9\'th - seems to be something I need do. And for recommendation:
Varése: \'Ameriques\'!

I knew that Mahler had started a 10th but I didn\'t know it was finished...who finished it?

Nobody did, as I know it. It just remains
unfinished. It\'s only the Adagio that\'s
complete and a Scherzo almost.

Gee Thomas, it was my hope you were fat, ugly and uninterested in girls. I would not want anything to get in your way of the study and production of music. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif
So, Thomas and others, I do have a little Mahler, but anything y\'all would point to as the central piece/recording that is a must own? Thanks.

Mahler\'s 10th - Dereck Cooke did a complete version of the unfinished score which should be available on CD.

Bjk,
Here\'s a couple of different versions available:
TELARC 80565 -- 11/00
\"Most listeners are no doubt familiar with the opening Adagio of Gustav Mahler\'s Symphony No. 10. The Adagio is the only portion of the work that was completed by the composer. Mahler began the work in the summer of 1910, a period of great personal turmoil, but his death in the spring of 1911 prevented its completion. There have been a number of attempts to complete the work from sketches left by Mahler, perhaps the most famous effort was by the musicologist Deryck Cooke. This recording features a new performing version by Remo Mazzetti, a musicologist who has studied every available version of the work. The performance is by the Cincinnati Symphony under the direction of Jesus Lopez-Cobos, the orchestra and conductor who premiered the Mazzetti edition in 1999.The symphony is a wrenching affair that balances tragedy and tranquillity. The opening Adagio, elegiac in tone, is played with passion under Lopez-Cobos\' direction. The second movement Scherzo is suitably raucous, while the third movement Purgatorio is agitated. The final two movements, Scherzo II and Finale are fiery and ultimately, restive. Telarc\'s vivid sound quality complements this excellent performance.\"
or
EMI CLASSICS 56972 -- 6/00
This disc received the 2000 Gramophone magazine award for \"BestOrchestral Recording\" and \"Record of the Year.\" It also received a Grammy Award for \"Best Orchestral Performance\" and a nomination for \"Best Classical Album.\"Gustav Mahler began work on his Symphony No. 10 in the summer of 1910, shortly after the triumphant first performance of his gargantuan Symphony No. 8. During the summer of 1910, Mahler\'s life was in turmoil, having discovered his wife was having an affair; so he took time off to consult with Sigmund Freud in Vienna. By the summer\'s end Mahler\'s symphony was a skeleton. Unfortunately, Mahler\'s death in the spring of 1911 prevented him from completing the work. This recording features Sir Simon Rattle leading the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in a version of the symphony completed by musicologist Deryck Cooke. The symphony is a harrowing work that juxtaposes tragedy and tranquillity. The opening Adagio, which is expansive and eloquent, is played with a searing intensity under Rattle\'s direction. Country dances dot the second movement Scherzo, while the third movement Purgatorio has a restless energy. The final two movements, Scherzo II and Finale, are marked by fury and resignation. This is a thrilling performance that\'s filled with drama and poetry.Gramophone (5/2000 p.62) - \"... Over the years, Rattle has performed the work nearly 100 times, far more than anyone else...Had the musicians everplayed movements two to five? I doubt it and it seldom matters: they\'vebeen rehearsed within an inch of their lives...\"

Mahler fans you should explore some Bruckner too. Especially Symphony No.4 the \"Romantische\", but also No.s 8 & 9. Can\'t live without them & my Mahler\'s (1st, 5th & 9th for me).

Don\'t forget Bruckner\'s 7th - the adagio movement is sublime - as are most of the adagios in his symphonies. There are also two recronstructions available on CD of the final uncompleted 4th movement of the 9th - mind finishing on the adagio is pretty hard to top.

What a great movie. And P.K. D i c k was a great SF author (can you believe the foul-language filter wouldn\'t let me post his name single-spaced? Good Lord! http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/rolleyes.gif ).
The Vangelis soundtrack wasn\'t bad, either!

I\'m glad someone her like \'sur incises\'. It\'s a gorgeous piece of music. I live in Paris and happened to see dozens of Boulez Concerts as well as directing master class. Always a chock...
As for Mahler, his version of the 6th is very impressive. For the 10 th (\'complete\' version) I go for the Eliahu Inbal version (DENON Records).
To finish, a bit about Bruckner. His 8th is perhaps my favorite symphony ever... I add old versions of Haitink and Jochum but the live version of Boulez (again) is excellent. He\'s incerdible in a field he didn\'t touch often.
Sorry to be so much OT but a Boulez/Mahler/Bruckner topic was too much for me... (when will it be a Bartok/Stravinsky/Ligeti one?)

Hi Phattlippz,
Yes, it\'s fantastic. Especially the Adagio -so many feelings.
You should listen to Brahms \"Deutche Requim\" and off course my favourite of them all \"Brahms 1 symphony\".
And don\'t forget: Vaughan Williams Seranade to music.

My favorite pieces from Mahler are his Lieder, intimist work, fabulous way to handle time and much more fragile than the symphonies...
The peaks of my happiness, the very best moments I spent listening music where when I discovered Mahler\'s Lieder sang by Kathleen Ferrier. It is unbelievable, I cry every time I hear \"Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen\" (the quintessence of the Adagietto from 5th, with Rückert\'s finest poems plus Ferrier\'s voice).
I\'m sure you guys already knew those, but if you don\'t : please buy the CDs, get the scores, listen to the voice (make sure to read the comments about her life in the booklets!), but don\'t forget to buy tissues before...
As always, sorry for my english !
