Tell me more about the Virus. Anyone else have this product?
Can it be used for warm ambience type stuff?
Would love to hear from you Virus owners

I wouldn\'t recommend it for warm ambient stuff, but with some programming, who knows? It\'s pretty deep. I use it for the cutting sounds and vocoder.

I don\'t own it yet, I\'m waiting for the \"C\" version. But the Access website has some great mp3s. The first example is a few phrases from the first 60 patches. A very short way into this demo and I was sold.
Hi,
I own Virus and I love it..
Yes harsh edgy stuff is what it\'s best at, but if you start programing it it can be as soft as a cloud..great pads due to a very good LP filter, and a wavetable..

Nick, not warm?!?! The Virus must be the warmest VA I heard for sure.
...Simon have you tried Nord Modular?

I recently bought a nord lead 3, and it has some great warm ambient stuff, and pads...The more I use this board, the more I like it....for me it covers alot of territory...every thing from harsh Trent Reznor NIN stuff to Vangelis and Tangerine Dream sounds...I AB\'d the nord against the Virus at the guitar center, and I just didnt think the virus held up to it. of course I was just hearing the \"stock\" virus patches...and who knows... maybe some raver kid tweaked the virus on the showroom floor and messed up all the patches....for me the nord won.

My impression of the Virus was that the pads were not so spectacular. I liked it a lot though for basses and leads, very edgy and agressive.
Haven\'t gotten around to the Nord Lead 3, but my impression of previous Nords were that they were edgy as well. Same with the modular, although the flexibility with that is outstanding. The Nord 3 I\'ve heard is much different.
I currently use an Alesis Andromeda, which does very warm pads. The Supernova also can do some good \"pretty\" pads if that is your goal.

You can do GREAT pads with the Virus. There are some wonderful ones in the new 4.5x ROM presets. I haven\'t tried Nord Lead much but everybody says it\'s hard to program and that you more or less need an external efx unit connected to it because it can hardly do simple stuff like chorus. I will check it out along the Supernova 2 though and see what I like best.

IMHO I think the nord has the best interface...the mackie d8b \"V-pot\" style LED knobs are very intuitive...everything is right there infront of you...all values lit up for you like a xmas tree....and...an LCD screen....very helpful if you happen to gig in the dark. if you have a fundamental understanding of synth programing, or none at all you will be tweaking in a couple of hours...you have the option of starting a patch from scratch, or dialing up a patch that sounds close to something you like, and tweaking it to your liking...while its true Simon, that the nl3, or any of the prev nords for that matter dont have onboard FX like delay, or verb, it does have a unison function that creats a phat chours effect.....yes ...thats right all\' a yall I said the word ..phat.....personally I like to use my plug ins in DP3.0 for fx, because they sound better, than any onboard keyboard fx , and its easier for me to instantly have BPM syncd FX lock up to the sequencer...however I can see the value for a giging musician, or some one who dosent have plugins to want a board with onboard FX...
...well right now on my desk I have, Virus B, Waldorf Q and Novation Nova..Straight out of the box , it would have to be virus or nova, for pads, because they have very good FX engines..but then again, hook up a good FX unit on Waldorf Q, and nothing can beat it.. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif
And it depends what kind of \"pads\"..low movie score drones, or like, nice playable synth pads..hehe

wished to create music that is slower paced, Meditative type with Beats or Percussion such as Enigma/Deep Forest, but want pads similar to Tangerine dream/ Mike Oldfield/Vangelis. I would be better off with the Nord? and virus for more upbeat grainy/saw Techno type stuff?
Please shed a little more light.
Caveman
....well as far as I see it, All 3 Virus, Nova and Nord are pretty capable of those Tangerine dream/ Mike Oldfield/Vangelis stuff..
..I don\'t own Nord, but I did play around with Nord 3, and it probably has the richest tone out of them al, but you\'ll need some external FX for it....
I don\'t know...really, they all sound different and I love them all, just keep in mind that all of these VA sounds have very characteristic sound of their own..so go out and listen to them.. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

For pads, the lushest, deepest of them all may be the Oberheim Matrix12 (if you can find one, and have the time to program it).

What about ethnic type percussion sounds similar to groups I have mentioned, or are these synths mainly hardcore techno type percussion.
Caveman...
These are all anlogue or VA machines...and there is no such thing as Enigma/Deap Forest box...
It sounds like you\'re searching for a preset box...
Go and try out EMU Planet Earth, pleanty of pads, flutes and perc, and good programing features..or if you have Proteus 2000 get the Planet Earth ROM expansion.
