It's time to vote for our first Movie Music Challenge!

Entry 2: http://www.wizardwalk.com/MovieMusicChallenges/entries/Entry%232.mp3

Entry 11: http://www.wizardwalk.com/MovieMusicChallenges/entries/Entry%2311.mp3
Entry 12: http://www.wizardwalk.com/MovieMusicChallenges/entries/Entry%2312.mp3
For our first challenge the theme is " Dark Passage" and the challenge was:
As director of this new movie, I would like you to create approximately 3 minutes of music for the following film concept:
This is a dark and foreboding story of a conflict between good and evil. Good will prevail in the end but suffer great loss. The main character is human and all his resources, beliefs and commitments will be tested by a ‘dark lord’, a lord whose powers stem from the bowels of the earth. The Hero will discover man’s connection to the earth and the powers of the universe which have gone untapped by man for eons.
Many thanks to wrayer for p[utting this all together. Thanks again to Sean for hosting the entries. And a big thanks to all of the participants.
This is a "one-vote-per-person" poll. We'll keep the voting open for about two weeks.
Have fun and good luck!

Awesome! Thanks for getting this up so quickly Gary! I'll be sure to listen to them all twice under the following criteria:
1st listen: First Impression - over all
2nd listen: how well does it fit the scenario given?
Can't wait to hear them all! Thanks everyone for giving so many entries to listen to!

All of them sound really good. It'll be cool to see how everyone votes.
Also, to people who entered get to vote? If they do, can they vote for themselves?
sanyarem

Yes, they can vote, and voting is anonymous (at least that's the way it is with all the other challenges) so anyone can vote for his or her own entry. (like how I kept subject-verb agreement in that last sentence? :p )

Hi Sean and Gary - you should fix the link to number 8 - it goes to a soundclick page. If the entry is on that page, it is not anonymous.

I went through and listened to all of them. This was just a preliminary once over – I’ll do a more thorough job later and pick one. It’s going to be tough – there are a lot of entries and all of them are good.

I have downloaded all but number 8. It is not free and I usually listen off line to make my decision. I hope this can be corrected. I am excited to hear these and this should be an interesting challenge.

Well I am the guy that set this up and #8 did not send me an mp3 file, just a soundclick link. So I was 'hand-tied' and included it the only way I could. Sorry, just ignore the name and vote for the music! (Is that a good cop-out?)

I have made it thru them all (while doing my Egyptian math problems) and am very impressed. There is some great music here. I even think that I know who did some of these, although having their names in the titles did help a bit.
I do hope we get a lot of people here to listen and to vote.
My favorite one is the one that is under 20 minutes long and uses some GPO instruments. It is truly a work of art.

--Something must be in the process of being changed this morning, because I'm getting "page can't be displayed" on all of these. I'll come back when I can.
It's unfortunate that entry #8 wasn't submitted correctly. I'm not planning on going to Sound Click where I'll be able to see the user's name. To me, it's an automatic disqualification. --Surely that person could provide an MP3? That's what he/she had to have when the piece was uploaded to SC.

The few I checked seem to load into Quicktime player with no problem. I am clicking on the ones at the start of the topic not the original postings from Gary Garritan. Maybe that is the difference.

For those having problems:
If you are playing with the online player then I believe you need QuickTime installed on your computer.
At least this is my guess. I'm not in charge of this thread, I am just offering advice.

But the technical problem I experienced this morning has cleared up, the links are working for me now. As usual, I have to temporarily download each one to hear, but all's working as per norm for me now.

Hi all, I hope everything is working better now. I have given Gary the new link to posting #8 and that should be working now as well as the others. Thanks for your patience, I am learning how to do this as I go.
I would mention that if you are a contestant in the future, please just send an mp3 file with not attributes (leave your name off the file sent as an entry). I really don't have the time to go thru each file and remove any file info. Thanks and good luck to you all. There is some great music here! I am tempted to write the screen play based on what I have heard from our contributers!

By online player, I meant that when you click on an entry you are to an html page that has a quicktime player and only a quicktime player on it that plays the tune you clicked on. To me that is a player that is online and not on my computer.

Semantics and me don't always happen. What I mean and what I say are losely interpretable. (is that even a word?)
For me, I have downloaded the mp3s and made them into a cd that I listen to when I am driving in the car somewhere. I have to say, these are all excellent entries and I am enjoying everyones piece. It shows how one idea or story line can have so many interesting ideas derive from it.

QuickTime has browser plug-ins that will allow you to open MP3 and other media files in your browser by just clicking on their links... it's not really an html page, it's just a browser plug-in...
I'm not exactly sure why some have been unsuccessful in their attempts to listen to these entries, but it may have something to do with the file names, which have the # symbol in them. This appears as '%23' in the links; most browsers should change it back to the # symbol automatically, but if you're having trouble you may have to try changing it manually. If it's not that, maybe something was just messed up with my hosting service earlier. And if it's not that, it's because of aliens. %-
I'll see if I can create one of those Flash MP3 players that has all the entries like I have for the Orchestration Challenges...

HMmm, thanks for the explanations, Rich, Wrayer and all - but like Gunther, no player comes up for me.
I have Quicktime, Real Player, and Windows Media Player--but none of those open when I click on a link. Just as when I listen to pieces in The Listening Room, I have to do a temporary download, which takes from 30 seconds to 4 minutes, depending on the piece's length and how high grade the MP3 is.
Hence my earlier question - I never see a player when I click on an MP3 link. Players at sites like Box work for me of course. I suppose it could be because of this ancient computer I use to be online.
I'm very used to it though. When I have time to hear things in The Listening Room, it can add an extra 1/2 hour just to open things I'm wanting to hear.
Meanwhile--Still have more of these interesting "movie theme" pieces to hear. Looking forward to hearing the rest.

It should be a browser setting... somewhere in your browser's "options" or "preferences" you should be able to set what the browser does with media links like MP3s.
Sean, "you the man". And Sean "I am really sorry for causing all this fuss!"
No no, you founded this challenge, you the man! :)

rbowser- you could also try checking the settings in whichever media player you prefer. You can usually tell it to be the primary media player to open certain types of media files, such as MP3 or WAV.
wrayer
02-20-2008, 08:27 AM
There is no player attached to these entries. It "is a temporary download" which then should be played on a player you have designated as the default player. These entries are just mp3 files.
I hope this clears up this discussion. You can always 'right-click' and download to your desktop and then play the entries.
rbowser-
02-20-2008, 08:37 AM
Thanks for the tips, guys.
It really must be the limitations of this very old computer which is still running on Windows 98. Whenever I have a media player of any sort designated as the default player for MP3s, it always ends up saying "cannot play this file"--error messages of that sort.
Exactly as you said Wrayer, since you reiterated what I was explaining before:
"...There is no player attached to these entries. It "is a temporary download" which then should be played on a player you have designated as the default player. These entries are just mp3 files..."
Yes, that's the way I've always played music online. The Windows pop-up appears with the choice to open or save, I choose open, wait for the temporary download to happen, and at the conclusion my Windows Media Player opens and plays it. - "...just MP3 files..." - Yes of course, that's what most music files online are, like everything we hear in The Listening Room.
I'm chugging along OK with my machine's old-fashioned ways.
Randy B.
MP3 files usually open up my Windows Media Player without any intervention for me. But all these links are doing that (as expected) but then reporting "Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted." I've not right clicked them and saved, I was just hoping to be able to listen with while working on some other stuff. There has to be something odd going on.

What an inspiring group of pieces, all of which have clearly been put together with care and passion.
I enjoyed finally voting on an entry, and was surprised to see that the one I chose as the most suitable for the movie's scenario, and which I feel came closest to the commercial market this theoretical movie is aimed for--has only one vote so far, mine!
Fun stuff.

Congratulations to #7
I loved the way the composer developed the movement, building interest and complexity little by little, much in the same way as found in a Strauss Tone Poem. Well done!
The wide range of sonorities, from the low contrabass bassoon to flutter tongued high winds, along with the harmonically-rich muted brass helped me visualize the Contest's stated theme.
-----------------------------------------
My entry was #10. I had fun trying to get the Taiko drums just right. And, the horn gliss at the end was a first for me and symbolizes the Human's chest pounding victory over Evil. I'm looking forward to the next "assignment". :)

Congratulations to neighbor number #7. I'm glad that I took part in Challenge. I was number #6.
I'd like to thank the members of the Academy for.... Oh, drat! Wrong speech.
This is indeed an honor to claim ownership of #7, and I am most grateful to those who voted for it. That the final vote was close I think is an indication that there were so many wonderful entries to choose from. And I would also like to thank Mr. Rayer for coming up with the clever idea for this challenge. I think we all had a great deal of fun with it.
So in terms of the next challenge, I’m open as to the time-frame. Do people want to stagger these by a couple of weeks, or do they prefer to jump right in to the next one? I’ll be happy to oblige either way. So let us know what your thoughts are about this.
Again, thanks to all who participated in this new challenge, and for the subsequent challenges I hope we’ll hear from you all plus some new, enthusiastic composers as well.
Sincerely,

A very done piece! Lots of good writing in there. Choose your prize wisely!
I wish we would have had a piece of video to score to as a verbal interpretation is pretty difficult. Like a book - everyone's visual imagination is different. That said, it would probably be impossible in this forum at this time - maybe in the future????
