Ive been running GS successfully for quite a while and then......
about 2 weeks ago, I noticed the icon for GS had changed to a little rocket ship.
Now, I would have thought that myteriously charming except at about the same time
1. I began to experience strange crashes
2. When I would trigger a note, no matter what sample, I began intermittantly
getting the faint sound of the sample but mostly course, low, gravelly distortion.
3. And now, its not intermittant but constant.
4. The little rocket ship icon is constant now. No matter what, I cannot get the
default icon to appear even though it shows up in the properties menu. So......

I have done complete uninstalls and reinstalls twice ( according to Tascam directions). I have considered that perhaps the icon issue is merely coincidental and not related to the real problem of not being able to use the program at all right now.
I wondered if maybe my Delta 1010 had taken a dump, etc, etc. But it works flawlessly on VST Instruments, etc.

So it is really starting to seem that GigaStudio has a problem, Or rather I do. And I, for the life of me, dont know how to fix it. Please help.

A fully optimised AMD Atlon 1.4, 1Gig Ram etc., etc..Win 98SE
PS. Have run Norton Utilities to check for system malfunctions and all that.
Everything clean as a whistle
Thanks in Advance

Have you scanned for viruses? I\'ve seen icons change after files have been modified by a few viruses.

Also, check in your installed programs and see if you have a program called Comet Cursor installed. If so, remove it. That has been known to cause problems, and it installs without you knowing about it.

Good Luck.

I second what Vertigo said about Comet Cursor..that\'s what it sounds like. You should be able to find it in Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it.

Checked for Comet Curser and found nothing.
Checked for Viruses too....nothing. I discovered though that in the GS properties
menu it mentions that one of the versions of
GS is names Apollo. The icon Im getting looks
suspiciously like an Apollo Rocket.
And it also said that the version I have is
Beta. But Ive had this program for quite a while (GS96) and have never had problems (at least like this) with it before.Anyother suggestions?
BTW...I really should have posted this under the software heading...sorry. But I know all
the most knowledgable folks hang out here alot.

Hi,
Well, no pun intended but something has definately run amuck. ;-)

I would recommend:

1) At a minimum, uninstall and reinstall GS96.

2) If it\'s been awhile since you installed Windows, then I\'d consider a complete rebuild of the OS followed by reinstalling GS96.

Something has definately gotten on your machine and made a change. Hopefully it\'s not too dangerous, but no reason to let it live any longer.

Cheers,
Mark

Sorry for the delay in answering this one...

Actually this is an easy one. This has to do with your video card actually. I\'ll bet you changed your monitor resolution recently didn\'t you....possibly to a large pixel size? Let me know what your monitor settings are set to.

Set it to 1024 x 768.... that should fix it.

Hi, Yeah, Ive tried all sorts of various settings but generally I use 16 bit and had that setting when the problemd began. Any other suggestions? Tascam doesnt understand it yet either.

Sounds like your shell icons are corrupt.

Look for a file called ShellIconCache, typically located in C:\\Windows. It will be flagged as hidden, probably, so you\'ll have to adjust your folder settings to display hidden files.

Delete this file and restart the computer...

See if that helps it!

\"I discovered though that in the GS properties menu it mentions that one of the versions of GS is names Apollo. The icon Im getting looks suspiciously like an Apollo Rocket. And it also said that the version I have is Beta.\"

I would contact Tascam and get rid of the beta version and install the final release if available.

Per EnsoniqWiz\' suggestion, check out http://www.techadvice.com/w98/I/IconCacheFile-rebuild.htm (\"http://www.techadvice.com/w98/I/IconCacheFile-rebuild.htm\").

Hi Everbody and thanks for all your help but,

deleted shelliconcache -
still have same damned icon, same problem.
Cant use GS at all becaus of previously mentioned distortion problems. And Tascam says they dont get it
either. No response from them after sending the diagnostic readout.
This Runamuck has run aground.
Thanks though.

Anytime I set my color option to 256 (8 bits), the rocket ship would appear. Make sure you\'re using at least 16-bit color.

Prior to backing up your essential files and performing a clean install of Win98SE, I\'d do the following:

1. Reinstall or update the video driver.
2. Make sure the Delta PCI card is not in the slot next to the AGP video card, and update the Midiman driver (or downgrade if you updated the driver shortly before the problem arose).
3. Uninstall GS96, manually purge system.ini and the Registry of obvious Nemesys/Tascam residue (use the Find tool in regedit), delete the program directory, run RegClean, reboot, then reinstall GS96 (the final release, not the beta, as Munsie noted).

If you do reinstall Win98SE, buy a copy of Ghost and routinely create a disk image of your entire system drive (save the image to your \"gig\" drive, assuming you have one, or perhaps to a Firewire or USB 2.0 drive). You may have been able to fix the problem with \"scanreg /restore\" as soon as you encountered it, but I\'m afraid you no longer have the \"good\" registry (stored as a .cab file) in your C:\\Windows\\Sysbackup directory. Of course, scanreg doesn\'t always solve these types of problems, but a recently created Ghost image will, assuming the problem isn\'t in the hardware.

Good luck!

Pat

Hi Pat,
Thanks for your suggestions. Actually Ive already reinstalled all the drivers for various peripherals and I think Ive done all that can be done short of reinstalling Windows - which I\'m right on the verge of doing. Ive been hoping Tascam might respond to the Diagnostic Readout but Ive waited several days and cant wait much longer :
I have a little project that is overdue.
But thanks again and thanks to everybody who has offered help. God it just occurred to me: what if reformatting and reinstalling Windows doesnt help? Pray for me and all those others who also need help!!!!
