In an effort to get to know our users better, Sunday is "Say Hello to Gary Day" *()

I'm going to sit by the phone for twelve hours all day, Sunday, May 18 - from 9am to 9 pm US Pacific (noon to midnight EST, 5 pm to 5 am GMT) to take your calls.

I recently posted that the fewer than expected problems with the Steinway made me feel like the Maytag repairman - the lonely guy waiting around for the phone to ring. So I sit waiting.... (silence)... and while waiting I thought how nice it would be to hear from our users and get to know some of you better. :)

How often have you called a company and went through an endless route of numbers, extensions, holding while listening to awful music, disconnects, recall, waiting, automated response labyrinths, etc. etc. .... and never talking to a genuine human being after the ordeal. :(

Well here is your chance to talk to this humble founder (and resident harpist) of one of the most well-known and successful soundware companies.

You can tell me what you would like to see in the future, your ideas, your hopes, wish lists, industry trends, any criticisms you have, advice that's needed, how we can improve things, your experiences, have a relaxed conversation, shoot the breeze... or talk about whatever interests you (sorry no horoscopes or stock picks). Ask me anything.

I'll dedicate my usual fax line to calls that day and the number to call me on Sunday will be:

(360) 376-5676

We'll have to limit calls to 5 - 10 minutes or so. If busy just keep calling.

The invitation is open, so feel free to call. I would like to hear from you.

My best,

Gary Garritan

Gary, How extraordinary! Thank you for this opportunity, I definitely will attempt to get through on Sunday. Regards, John (bigears)

I called NI mid-April and I'm still on hold. I wouldn't
mind all that much, but my wife wants to use the
phone.

Wait. No stock tips? No horoscopes? Could you
maybe recommend a good masseuse?

Seriously, great idea, Gary. But then, Garritan has
always been incredibly accessible. It's the only
software outfit in the whole industry where the CEO
answers the phone.

I can think of quite a list of companies that could
take a lesson from that. And should.

Best,

David

or talk about whatever interests you (sorry no horoscopes or stock picks)
You know I'm moving from London to Athens pretty soon and some info on the relationship of GBP to Euro would be wonderful! :D:D

Now, really, maybe it would be a good idea to have some kind of "appointement" settings? Online, until Sunday? I have a hunch that I will be on the phone forever trying to get through and that won't go down too well with my family. Unless you have one of those lines where "Please wait, you're 69th in que" or something... in which case I'll just pay the Steinway in a telephone call but I'll go through at least! :D

This sounds like a wonderful idea! I'm sure you'll have a great response. If I can call, I most certainly will. This Sunday is going to be my busiest day this spring, unfortunately.~| Too many rehearsals and a concert to perform. However, I will take the time no matter what. It would be great to chat for a few minutes with you. Take care.

My goodness - do take care Gary! Give yourself plenty of breaks and drink lots of water! If I'm near a 'phone on Sunday, I'll take you up on this - if only to give a verbal thank-you for the excellent software and support you provide to your customers and this community.

wow, thats extraordinary! Wish the other software companies that we actually need to unfortunately contact cos they are unable to produce as high quality software as Garritan would do this!

Unfortunately I wont call cos Im in England and have no money, otherwise I'd ring just to say thanks and ask: when's the next library coming out after the pipe organ?!

Amazing example, amazing company, amazing man. cheers.

Words sometimes come easier for me when I write than when I talk. It seems they posted a video about me recently –

My phone conversation with Gary:
GG – "So Trent, writing any music lately?"
TM – "Yep"
“What’s it called?”
“Dunno”
“An art song?”
“nope”
“See you got the new Steinway.”
“yep”
“Like it?”
“yep”
“Any upcoming Steinway posts?”
“Dunno”
“Any questions for me?”
“nope”
“Why’d you call?”
“dunno”
“Well, nice talking to you”
“yep”

Actually, I was also thinking about the possibilities of a conference call - perhaps not on this occasion but some point in the future. It would need to be well structured, perhaps around a specific topic, otherwise it could get a bit messy! On the other hand, it would be great just to say 'hello' to some of our friends here.

What a great initiative Gary!

Let's hope people respect it so it doesn't end up like this:

First Call:

[phone rings, Gary thinks, hooray here is my first caller of the day!]
Gary: "Hi it's Gary here, and who might this be?"
Caller 1: "Hi Gary, when's the ARIA GOS2 coming out?"
Gary: "Thanks for asking, we're working hard on that right now and will keep you posted, and who are you?"
Caller 1: "Yeah Gary, but is it imminent like the Steinway was imminent?"
Gary: "Umm you will just have to wait and see"

[phone rings]
Gary: "Hi it's Gary here, How are you doing?"
Caller 2: "Hi Gary, when's the choir being released?"
Gary: "You know the story with new products, we can never be sure when it will be finalised, but it shouldn't be too long, we're really busy finalising all sorts of things."
Caller 2: "Yeah we can hardly wait! You know that Steinway took a long time but it was worth the wait! Would you say the choir is imminent?"

[phone rings, Gary thinks "I hope they don't ask me about the release schedule again!"]
Gary: "Hi it's Gary here to whom am I speaking?"
Caller 3: "Hi Gary, Great products, shame about the Strad going off line, when it will be replaced? Imminently?"
Gary: "Don't mention that word!"
Caller 3: "Strad?"
Gary: "No."
Caller 3: "Imminent?"
Gary: "I said don't mention that word!"

[phone rings]
Gary: "Look I am not telling so go away!"
Caller 4: "Hi Gary. This is a journalist wanting to know why you are having a phone day, but it is clear that you just want to annoy your customers personally."

Gary,
Oh now this is a great idea!
Congrats on achieving "Maytag" status with Steinway.

Now how often, you ask, have I called a company... etc? Often enough that I try to avoid calling companies anymore if I can. Often enough that I have written "rant" poetry about it. In fact, an idea for another comic musical piece is brewing...

I once worked for MCI, and had a phone service account with them. I had to call them about some problem with my bill. Now, I was their employee, so figured this ought to be pretty painless. NOT! After an hour getting transferred, pressing buttons in response to computerized voices, and just basically going round and round, I finally got a human being. I got practically hysterical, and yelled to my housemates (in the tone of voice one might use to say one just won a million in the lottery) I got a person! a real live person!!! HAHAHAHAHA! Then to the poor person on the line, "Omigod, a real live person! Please, don't go away! Please, please! It took me an hour to get to you! Please, please don't hang up!", all delivered in a tone that must have made her think I had gone stark raving mad. ~|

All jokes about not having a clue what to say if I called aside, I did call and had a great conversation. Of course, 4 years of reading many posts and occasionally sitting in on chat, I almost feel I know Gary without having to call.

I think all company owners, chairmen of the board, CEOs, etc. should have at least one open phone day a year. None would be as much of a pleasure to talk to as Gary, but there are a few I’d love to give an earful.

As far as the spirituals in the background that David (etLux) talks about, ironically just today I was thinking about Raul Julia singing “Swing Low” on the Addams Family movie…..

(And my jokes have some truth to them - I never know what to say in most social situations)

Thanks for starting my day with inspiration! The choir demo you played sounds great! Will it be able to sing the words from Finale, too? If so, that will be a dream come true! Bravo to you and all your team for your work and especially for bringing this technology within the reach of those of us who can't afford or don't want to pay thousands. As I've said before, this has made an enormous difference in my musical life.

Hey! Philosophical conversation with Dave (etLux)?! Dang it! I'll have to wait til the next time! Wish I could have been a fly on the wall (or a bug in the phone ;)) for that one!

I just got off the phone with the CEO of Shell Oil. He asked on his website for people to call him at home and discuss any problems we might be having with his product. I told him how I thought he was doing a great job and gave him some comfort over the rising price of crude oil. I thanked him for keeping the price of gasoline down below 10$ a gallon and congratulated him on his soaring profits, even though gas prices are still less than the price of some bottled waters. He explained to me how his little 350 foot long yacht guzzles gas at the the rate of 200 gals an hour, so he goes out of his way to try to keep the price down. What a great guy!

In all seriousness, I am amazed that you would take the time to actually talk to your customers. This is the way the world worked a long time ago and for you to believe that it was the right thing to do again in these times, impresses me. I wish you further success and good luck in the future.

Using Styxx's drumming samples as a busy tone was quite creative, I thought . . . and it made a day full of busy signals a signal experience. (:wow: Quick, call the Pun Police!)

Got through about 3:30 (my time) and had a nice, brief discussion. Gary was quite nonchalant about my using a pirated version of GPO, although the numerous clicks and buzzes that told me the call was being traced made me leave that 'phone booth rather hastily!!! (:n:)

In all seriousness, though, I think it's a great idea to have personal contact with the CEOs, the developers, and the movers and shakers behind products we use. It works both ways: we know they've invested themselves in what they produce, and they know we're invested in them . . . and encouraging their good work.

We touched on the real community that this forum is, and I'd want everyone here to know that this is very important to Gary: more than a "consumable item" or "product" is the community that it spawns. That's an "attaboy" for everyone here.

RonHi Ron,

Were you able to talk some sense to that oil company executive? They're certainly looking out for us. ~| Pretty soon the price of sample libraries will be below the cost of a tankful of gas.

If talking to customers is the way the world worked long ago, I am all for going back to this bygone practice. Taking time to talk to users is the way t get a sense of what they want and how we can make better products. Can't think of a better way.

And thank you for taking the time to call. I can thing of many things one could do with their weekend. :) I wish you well in your exams and I am impressed with what you told me you were doing. Kudos to you!

Well, I must say how disappointed I was at not being able to join in yesterday. It turned out to be a busier day than I anticipated, what with church responsibilities and my 6 year old only grand-daughter's first dance recital. You know how it is - there are some family obligations that you don't even think about not supporting.* She was cute as can be and was so happy that her grandparents were there. Maybe if Gary recovers from this one and has another one I'll be able to participate.

*All of you grandparents will know whereof I speak.

Well, I had intended to call, but early in the day I was struck with an idea for a new piece. When I start composing, I usually become totally immersed in the music, and forget to eat, feed the cats, and breathe. Sleep is postponed until I realize that I have not the foggiest notion of what I am doing.

There was a choir demo?! darn, really wish I had been able to call. Any chance of posting the demo here Gary?

Hope you've recovered from your phone-athon!Hi Ben

Yes it was quite a phone-athon!
Playing some choir renditions was a little treat for some of the folks who called, No chance of posting it. I learned my lesson of posting demos prematurely. ;) Sorry!

Gary,

Thanks for the chance to chat with you yesterday. And also for the preview of the "choral library." What a treat!!! That sounds absolutely
awesome! I'll be the first in line to buy that baby when she's due. In any case, it was just a pleasure talking to you and getting to know the "maestro" who has made all these libraries possible. Again, whenever you are in Milwaukee you are welcome to stop by. Karen and I would love to have you over. Take care.Hi Gary

It was a real pleasure chatting with you. Thanks for calling. I just may take you up on your offer of hospitality when I'm in Milwaukee...you never know ;)

All my best,

Gary

Well, I must say how disappointed I was at not being able to join in yesterday. It turned out to be a busier day than I anticipated, what with church responsibilities and my 6 year old only grand-daughter's first dance recital. You know how it is - there are some family obligations that you don't even think about not supporting.* She was cute as can be and was so happy that her grandparents were there. Maybe if Gary recovers from this one and has another one I'll be able to participate.Jaybee,

It would have been nice to talk to you and there just wasn't a day that would have worked out best for everyone. I'm sure we'll talk sometime. You must have been very proud at your grand-daughter's recital. :) Given the success of the first call-in, I think I'll be doing it again.

All the best,

Gary

When inspiration strikes, you simply must go for it. Inspiration waits for no one. I hope we'll talk sometime in the future.

All the best,

Thanks all for making "Say Hello to Gary Day" one of my best days this year. :) I appreciate so many of you taking time out of your weekend to call.

I received over 40 phone calls Sunday and enjoyed each and every call.

It was good to learn more about you, where you are from, what you are doing, your interests, listening to some of your music, what you would like from us in the future. I learned a great deal from you and have a better pulse of our community of users.

This has been beneficial in many ways and maybe all company leaders should do this. Sometimes the people at the top are often the most clueless. Can you imagine if cell phone, oil company, cable or airline top management all did this?

Although last Sunday was unique, I want you to know I am always accessible. You can email me, or usually see me on Friday & Sunday chats, or Skype, or call me during normal business hours.

Let's do a "Say Hello to Gary Day" again.

My best,

Gary Garritan
