Let's say a wannabe-composer who also happend
to play the violin discovered that he had somewhat
of a lacking repertoire for his principal instrument.
Suppose the discovery evoked ideas of a violin
concerto but that those ideas were swiftly smeared
with insecurity since he didn't own the GPO Stradavari
violin. The question would thusly be if whether the
GPO solo violin would be up to the job. Since he
only used it through Finale he thought it sounded a bit
static, but since he recently began running his music
through Sonar he found that perhaps was possible to
create a pleasingly enough sound. On the contrary he..

Oh, whatta Fugue! ~|
How much work do I have to put into the GPO Violin to make it sound concerto-good? :D

The introductory lessons take about 6 years, then followed by another 8 years to reach the level of "skilled". If you wish you then can follow some masterclasses with the real masters.:wow:

I think I'll stick to banjos or kazoos.

... but if you play the violin why do you want to use samples?

Are you saying that there aren't that many pieces written for violin? Or just that said wannabe-composer hasn't written any?

Felix, I am not experienced or exceptionally skilled with music or with using GPO violins. However, I posted my first piece the other day in the Listening Room, and it's a violin solo called Dark Island.

There are still some things that could be done to tweak the quality even more, but I'm thinking it sounds pretty good as is.

Is this even approaching the kind of quality you were looking for? I did it using GPO 3 (Kontakt2), Noteworthy Composer, and Cubase SX3.

My honest opinion is that the GPO solo violins simply are not up to the task. Using the Stratavarius would do it, but even that takes a lot of careful work to make it really shine in a concerto setting.

The GPO solo violins sound great, but only with certain types of material. The problem is with the limited articulation you'll be able to play with. If what you write just happens to fall within its strengths, you could make a halfway decent demo, but if you're writing a full-fledged concerto, that isn't too likely.

Hi there!

I use the "Strad" a couple of weeks now and I must say: WOW!!
But my real violin is more easy to play :)
Anyway, I posted some "Stradivarius" stuff in the listening room.

Good luck
