View Full Version : The Authorized Steinway is Now Shipping
Garritan
03-28-2008, 05:25 PM
I am pleased to announce we began shipping the Authorized Steinway Professional version.
Those who placed orders with the Go-Round will be the first to receive their copy. The Standard version will begin shipping in another week or so. And then the basic version will follow.
This has been an incredible journey and a maiden voyage. This is our first product using the Aria engine. We started out making a sampled library and soon realized that none of the engines did what we needed. So we undertook to develop our own engine with Plogue.
As is typical with all first releases there is bound to be things we could not discover and there may be some things to work out. Although we tested across a wide range of machines and hardware, it is impossible to test them all. We'd love it if you'd report any issues as early as possible to we can have rapid upgrades so you can have the best experience possible.
We are focusing on getting some demos posted soon.
This marks a new chapter for us and am grateful for your support.
My best,
Gary Garritan

Congratulations Gary on the release. I hope it satisfies all your aspirations and more. I have just started a new job after an extended period without work and once I have recovered financially I will order your product.
Here's to an outrageous success!

this is awesome news. i was beginning to think that the ARIA Player was just a dream i had in a lost land a long long time ago. i can't wait until GPO is ARIAized. i also can't wait to start hearing some demos - if it sounds half as realistic as the Gofriller and Stradivari i'll be blown away. only time will tell.

No, no. It's a Jesuit trap, them black keys. Pry 'em off. Use them to make necklaces for your wives and concubines.

Danny,
Stay off the black ones. They make C major sound really, really bad, ROFL.

You mean I spent all that time listening to Crosby, Stills, and Nash for NOTHING!!!?
Sit yourself down at the piano
Just about in the middle
Put all your fingers on the black notes
Anywhere you want to
Sing along--write a song
And understand that you can play
- Graham Nash
P.S. That's the whole song. Silly you if you took lessons.

Wow! Does that bring back some memories of when I was 14 years old. That was required practice by my piano teacher. I'm sure my copy is buried around here somewhere, complete with all of her notations.

Hi, Gary!
I've been waiting for this. I tried to order using the one-page online ordering but don't know which shipping option to choose as i need to ship it to the Philippines.

Mmm - Hanon deja vu here too. Strangely pleasant...
Back to the main event - am I right in thinking at this stage the Aria engine is only available as a player for the Steinway?

Congratulations. Now demos can be posted. Will there be a separate site to post these in here at N.Sounds, or will it be on the Steinway site?

Congratulations Gary. I can't wait to begin playing your new
Steinway D and using ARIA. This seems like a wonderful
combination.
Thank you for such a marvelous instrument.

Still no answer as to whether or not the Steinway is "notation friendly".
Will we know before it ships?~|

It is indeed notation friendly,
Gary fully respects and understands his customers that use
notation programs like Sibelius and Finale.
There are going to be demos posted hopefully in a day or two
by real pianist playing in realtime, notation export, and a few
by silly me who can not play piano worth a darn, thank goodness
for the ability to edit, I can make music with my computer's mouse.
Any way you play it, the Garritan Steinway sets a new standard for realism.

I think what Michel means is: can it be loaded as a VST plugin in Finale? And the answer to that question would be "no" until MakeMusic changes their policy. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Michel, if I misinterpreted your post, as Nickie may be right,
perhaps you should email Gary@harps.com and ask him.

Yes, Nickie had it right.
I was asking if the new piano would be notation-friendly, meaning will it work in Finale. And obviously, since Finale does not support the new player at this time, that means the new piano livrary is NOT "notation-friendly".
That was all I wanted to know.

Hey Michel
While you will not be able to load ARIA directly into Finale, that does not mean that it can not be used in conjunction with Finale.
Use a midi yoke, such as the one available from http://www.midiox.com (http://www.midiox.com/) and route the midi output from Finale into the midi yoke, and the output of the Midi yoke into Aria.
If you're writing scores for an ensemble using GPO (or any other Garritan lib) and Steinway, use a similar setup. Route output of channels 1-16 to midi yoke then to Aria, Route channels 17-32 to midi yoke then to standalone KP2 (and so on for more instruments)
You may need to play around with HP settings/prefs to get the correct controllers working, but HP does allow for that, and you can also create new/modify existing techniques to achieve things with this sort of setup.
Cheers...

This is a very good, often-overlooked point. Anything that can run standalone, or even in a VST host can be used with Finale. It just takes a little extra work to get the initial setup in place.
Of course, true VST support would be easier.

For those who have both Finale 2008 and Sonar 7, as I do, here's a quick and easy way to do it: prepare the score in Finale using Finale's Garritan instruments (select the Steinway). Export the finished MIDI file to Sonar, use the Aria engine within Sonar and polish up the performance.

Well, if the Aria player is the route of the future for Garritan's products, I hope that this is going to, at some point, be "hand in hand" with MakeMusic the same way it was with the Kontakt Player.
I am one of those users who will not change their way of working to add a sequncer into the loop, nor start fiddling around with MIDI yokes and virtual cables and stand-alone versions etc...
I know I'm not alone.
It looks like the future of Garritan products in my work will depend on how closely they continue to work with MakeMusic and Robert Piéchaud (HumanPlayback's creator). It would be a terrible shame if the great collaboration of the last few years ended with the implementation of the new player.
Finale + Kontakt Player + HumanPlayback were finally giving results that were stunning.

Gary eluded earlier that great things were going to be coming from a continued partnership between MakeMusic and himself. While no formal announcement has been made, I would be EXTREMELY surprised if the Aria engine was not supported directly soon.
Originally I wasn't all that interested in the Steinway as almost 100% of my work is marching and concert band related. Then I listened to the demos. Holy hell. Impressive. I'm sold. I don't know what I need it for, but now I need it. I'll find a reason if I have to. Sign me up.

Actually, she was rather impressed herself. She knows I wouldn't go crazy over it unless it was really good. And who knows, I've been branching out over the last couple years into areas that, while not unexpected, I had not planned on. Maybe this will push me even further!
Or maybe I just like new toys.

It could be a fun night just installing! It does take awhile to install the piano especially if you install all perspectives. Definitely worth the wait!

Housekeeper: You've ruined that piano!
Clouseau: What is the price of one piano, compared to the terrible crime that has been committed here
Housekeeper: But that's a priceless Steinway!
Clouseau: Nyot Anymeur. :D

Congratulations.
This is a great sounding piano, and every time I play it I'm inspired. The resonance options are wonderful, and even the EQ is useful (I add a bunch treble when I'm palying pop/comped piano parts and it gives some additional attack that helps it cut through).

That was what I was missing in the demos...., a little bunch treble. *()
