View Full Version : Emotional strings writing with GOS...

I don\'t have the library myself, (yet...)

But I would be really interested in hearing some slow, emotional writing with GOS strings. Mostly we talk about all of the nice short articulations. I know the library can do that. But what about the slow writing.

Anyone want to share anything? Both strings-only as strings-in-orchestra would be interesting I think!

Hey Maarten,

Ask Simon to send you his demo called \"Sugary Warfare\" if you want to hear some emotional strings from GOS.

Also if you haven\'t heard it, I did a demo of the Shawshank Prison theme with all GOS strings that has some real tender moments.
Here\'s the link: http://damonbbradley.tripod.com/damonbradley/ (\"http://damonbbradley.tripod.com/damonbradley/\")

The demos are at the bottom of the webpage http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif.

Speaking of Simon...

Hey Simon. Just listened to your collegno+trills.mp3. One of the best things I have heard recently. I hope you develop that theme. I was developing something similar (using col legno, martellato, col arco etc) when you came along and spoiled it for me. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif Nice work. Do yourself a favor and make sure the mp3 has an artist name and title.
Sorry for the OT.

Maarten... I cant believe you\'re asking this.... http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif Have you not heard my demos or do you just don\'t think it is slow enough? If you want, I can hold all notes for their entirety - that would end up becoming pretty slow?....

Damon and others have probably dont slow demos too.

Well, puzzled.. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

Go to the GOS site. Jeremy Soule has two astonishing demos.

Simon,

Don\'t get me wrong here. I\'ve said a few times that you are a killer composer...

Anyway, not to be a flame maker but I thought
the strings on this GOS demo 4 sounded very fake.., or muddy, or something.

Again, not the writing ... the sound.

What was I hearing?

How could that be a flame?? Anyway.... you were hearing violins, cellos and violas playing whole-step trills for the most part.

And DWdone, thanks a lot http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif The reason for the names was just for Gary to know what the demos were about when he used them at NAMM http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

You never know on here. Some just flip out, ya know? http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

Anyway. I may post a sample of GOS slow as well. I have been working on a few tricks to get GOS to have that romantic/tear jerkin tone.

Kings updates will help big time.

\"you were hearing violins, cellos and violas playing whole-step trills\"

Simon, my fault. I was speaking OPUS #5.

Ah... Totally different story then. Well... I think that sounds pretty real, but that is just my own very subjective opinion of course. It is a very disharmonic and somewhat atonal piece I guess. In the style of some of Horners music for Patriot Games and Williams\' for JFK/A.I. It is with emphasis on cellos, a little viola and then violins on top.

PS. They track you thought I was referring to is all that and a bag of chips http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif Killer sound and even more so... the composing.

I am really struggling with GOS and tender moments. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/frown.gif I trying everyting. Expression control, attacks, reverb... auuughhha.

I\'ll get it!!

Francis, the Opus 5 was never meant as emotional in the typical Hollywood-syrup sense... http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif I havent really tried to do anythink like that, the closest is the Zimmer piece.

I hate to be the voice of discent here, but I really do think the short bows are where GOS excels... the long bows, to my ears anyway, are lacking and dare I say it a tad synthy.

Having said that I have had great results with the Sordino Long Bow\'s.

I just wish GOS had a patch similar to the AO soft sustains patch.

Truth be told... that\'s what I would hope to achive via GOS. GOS, is a cake walk for powerful string moments but a challenge for the tender ones. IMO.

Whooooossssshhhhhhh (flame just flew over my head) http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

Tokyo Joe:

Funny you mentioned that, the other night I was working on something, and I neaded to throw in some really soft and eary high strings...I was trying and trying with my GOS, and anded up using AO Soft Sustain as allways..thats kind of funny..
I wonder if there\'s any chance of GOS update, I mean, only one patch of with GOS quality and AO Soft usability would do it for me...pretty much everything else I can do with GOS...

Thanks for the kind words Francis. What he is talking about are some experimental files that I created after reading the earlier exchange in this thread. I wanted to test the waters with Francis. It\'s far too early in their development for these files to be distributed, but they will very likely be included in a future update to the library. Just to assuage your curiosity: These are files that concentrate on the soft end of the spectrum, taking advantage of the piano and mezzopiano samples in the library to help with delicate passages. Patience everyone: As with other ideas under development, we will get them to you as soon as they are ready.
