4th of July and Canada Day Contest - Win You Choice of a Library!

Music Contest

This coming weekend is Independence Day and yesterday was Canada Day. People in North America celebrate with parades, fireworks, ceremonies and festivities. To add to the celebration let's do some music and have a contest.

Submit a short MP3 appropriate for Independence Day or Canada Day. It could be a patriotic piece, original work, or other appropriate music you may have already submitted. The work must use Garritan libraries.

The winning entry will win your choice of any library (Steinway, CoMB, JABB, GPO or our upcoming libraries). We'll end the contest on July 11th.

I am looking forward to hearing your Independence Day or Canada Day music.

With a new year coming upon our two great countries,
I am pleased to present my own humble musical comment;
a brief piece that I believe fully reflects both the deep
historical traditions we share, and the nature of our
prospects for forthcoming days...

Oh, and before anyone asks, yes, of course, this is, the
entire production, 100% GPO. Without further ado, then:

Fourth of July Extravaganza (http://www.davidsosnowski.com/fourth.mp3)

All my best,

Exquisite David! :)

I am not entering the contest, but want to share this "ALL GPO" version of

America The Beautiful (http://www.dankury.com/music/AmericaTheBeautifulArr.DanKury.MP3)

I put this together a few years ago and used GPO. It is based around the arrangement found on The Philips label with the Boston Pops with John Williams directing. I didn't have a choir so I had to arrange the second and third verses with woodwinds and pipe organ. Crank up that subwoofer, but only if it's really a subwoofer, you'll know what I mean :)

Happy Independence Day everyone!

etLux,

What a "stroke" of genius... ;-p 'nuf said! :wow:

DPDAN,

I really enjoy every piece you render and score in the Garritan Libraries. You are an inspiration. I enjoyed this rendition of "America The Beautiful" and want to thank you for sharing it with us.

EtLux: Did you use a DAW or notation software for that? I really can't tell :) Too funny.

Dan: As always beautiful job transcribing and rendering. Do you happen to know if John Williams arranged that?

Gary,

This is my entry, "Fireworks" (http://www.alexandermusic.com/resources/Fireworks.mp3). It is partially based on a MIDI file found years ago with no author. The creative work is mine.

Most of the instruments are GPO and JABB.

Regards and Happy Fourth,

Great! I'll be entering this one. I've actually got a piece I can submit, but I'll want to polish it up a bit before sending it in.

(Looks like rain tomorrow, so instead of going to the fireworks, I'll stay home and work on this.)

I don't know if this makes me a big jerk, but the political climate in the US inspired me to write a marching band show based on George Orwell's 1984. Maybe I'm one of those crazy guys that views standing up and making commentary about the state of democracy and freedom a high form of patriotism. That being said, I also have an arrangement of American the Beautiful, but that was already done!

I'd like to post this piece: (Sorry Dan - same tune)

America the Beautiful (http://www.box.net/shared/m1b0lzpwsw) for brass sextet. My brass group thoroughly enjoys playing this arrangement I did for them. The group consists of 2 trumpets, 2 horns, trombone and bass trombone.

Thank you Rich very much :)

Steve, it was the Boston Pops directed by John Williams, but the arrangement that I modified was by Alexander Courage.
Thanks for listening!

I'm strictly a notation fellow, myself, Steve: this is done
entirely in Finale 2008.

Isn't it amazing what you can do with notation these days?

Hey y'all.
thanks for the contest, Gary.
here's my entry:

It's an excerpt from larger work that i posted here a while ago. It reminds me of Vaughan Williams, for some reason. and although it's not an anthem or a march, i think it has a sense of pride to it, the way one might be proud of one's country.

David,

You really need to edit. Good ideas are one thing, but after we have heard them enough, it is time to get out and move one...

Let me be blunt: too much repetition will be the end of us all. Do try and be more concise in the future.

Criticism well taken, my friend. I admit it. I didn't do my
usual thorough job of pruning on this one... at least half
of the notes in it should have been victim of the editorial
red pencil.

Ah, well. I guess I'm just losing my touch...

My gosh, I'm really getting hammered on this piece.
First, the sloppy compositional work. And now --
I've committed the egregious sin of slathering it in
too much reverb...

I deserve it, I know, and I apologize to the forum,

Very close, very close. The complex theme used is technically
based on "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean" -- but without the
ocean.

Thank you so much, my friend!

If you run it backwards and EQ out the range from
100Hz thru 20,000Hz, you'll also here a retrograde
iteration of "She's Too Fat for Me".

Well, despite the already gorgeous entries here's mine. It's a brass quintet arrangement of The Navy Hymn (http://winknotes.home.comcast.net/eternal_father.mp3) (also called Eternal Father). I did this a few years ago for a group. I cleaned up some of the voice leading and of course rendered it with the brass from GPO.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate computers? I love them when they behave, hate them when they don't. My ever reliable HP started giving me fits tonight. The backup hard drive (all 320 gigs worth) stopped working. My M-Audio sound card started giving me fits. I had to use a different sequencer other than Cubasis because it wouldn't record for some reason. Then my machine refused to log onto Internet. I had to use my old Gateway as it worked fine...until the mouse quit. So here I am on my girlfriend's laptop praying to the Garritan gods that I will manage to finish this before the battery runs out!

So after much pain and suffering, here is my version of America the Beautiful:

Dudley Buck (1839-1909)-Festival Overture on the American National Air "The Star Spangled Banner" (http://www.box.net/shared/mfg2wjm04w) (2008 version)

Some of you may remember that I uploaded this to the Listening Room last year. It was just output straight from Finale, with no editing to speak of, but I said that I would eventually get around to a more thoroughly edited version. I though the contest would be a good place to do it.

Still needs a little more work, but I ran out of time. Maybe next year I can finally finish this!
