Hello people,

I am wondering about some nice \"ambient\" percussion sample cd\'s and have been chatting to various people about this, Kim Jensen (Innerloop) suggested the two cd\'s in the title...the main use if for games music.

has anyone got any information about the two cd sets?

I will be using the giga versions of the cd\'s as i dont have a sampler (except gigastudio, and im a bit green at using its sampling functions)

The cd\'s are priced around $199 from spectrasonic\'s website.

I have both sets. I don\'t really think that they\'re interchangeable - they are pretty different sounding libraries.

I\'d suggest listening to the demos, and picking the one that is closest to what you\'re looking for.

For what it\'s worth, I love \'em both, and wouldn\'t part with either one of them!

I don\'t have Metamorphosis, but I personally don\'t see the selling point of DR2 (which I do have) to be the percussion loops, but rather the textures. So if you want just the percussion, I dunno...

Yeah, it\'s got plenty of loops, and obviously you can stretch and shrink some of them to fit tempos, but it was really an afterthought in my purchase of it.

Of course, many may disagree. And unfortunately, the demo of DR2 at Ilio just doesn\'t do a good job of showing off the library.

So anyway, I guess this is half of a vote toward Metamorphosis. Or how about this... ignore my post. Forget I ever said anything. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

LOl,

Thanks lance, i value your opinion.
I can see what your saying...a lot of demo\'s dont really do justice to idems you buy...
i purchased the sfx board for the Jv2080 a while ago and the demo\'s offered by roland didnt really give a clear picture of the board. Or i may not have purchased it.

I would wait for Spectrasonics groove instrument, Stylus. I think you\'ll pretty much get all the samples from both libraries in that VSTi, as well as some new ones and a nice interface to program them with. I know I will be first in line when it comes out, apparently in march.

Simon,

Nice idea....i will have to look into that.
Although the dr2 and met cd\'s still look good enough to buy now...

Since I compose New Age, I can\'t wait for the Atmosphere groove instrument.

These new offerings from Spectrasonics sound really interesting, on paper (er computer screen), but I\'m anxious to hear some audio demos.

Actually I wasnt thinking straight http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif I dont think there\'s THAT much from DR1-2 in the Stylus - more from Metamorphosis and their new beats CD etc.

It would be interesting to see if anyone knows if the cd\'s have been used in any films or games.

Of course they have. There\'s a sound on Distorted Reality that sounds suspiciously like an effect from The Abyss. Maybe Eric Percing (sp?) was on the sfx team.

It may have seemed like a stupid question, but i wouldnt know if they had...
i was just curious if anyone could point the sounds out....

Spefically I can nome a couple if I tried.

Chrono Cross uses a loop from DR in the song Chronopolis.

The same loop is used in Gone in 60 Seconds

A few Media Ventures tunes use stuff off of DR1&2. As well as Percussive Adventures

The \"space Drums\" instrument in the DR series is used alot in Media Ventures stuff.

For \"ambient\" drums I\'m not so sure DR is the way to go. there are a couple of \"airy\" sounding loops but not really alot.

Metmorphosis would be a better option since its mostly percusion loops/hits and edits. Still not sure how ambient it is...I dont have it.

you may want to look into some Down Tempo/Trip Hop loop libraries.

Also time stretching slow and simple beats and adding a ton of reverb is awesome for that \"dreamy\" sound.

Take a bunch of \"one shots\" and process the hell out of them. Make multiplesounds from one hit.

you can make a whacky kit from processing one snare drum samples http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

BTW, If you aren\'t looking specifically for loops. Then DR may be a good starting point. As well as MetaMorph. DR has some really cool sounds that you can use as one shots in creating loops/grooves. There are \"pipe\" like sounds that can get a neat \"boom\" with a long \"coom/Ice\" sustain.

I guess what I\'m trying to say is that the DR stuff and Metamorph are probably good buys. I\'d look at the Stylus as the option to go for first if you dont NEED them right now. It definitely looks cool.

I have both libraries, just used Metamorphesis all over a thriller(mainly for some chases, and a long train surf), the groove control thing is really good although get the giga version not the akai. You can use ANY of the loops at almost ANY tempo without time stretching, basically Eric has chopped them up in a kind of \'recycle\' way then you trigger the individual hits via midi(actually I guess a LOT like recycle!) so you get a lot of variety out of one library. No construction kits though, but you can make up your own loops/variations by triggering the groove control differently. They all sound great. As far as DR sounds being used , I have personally heard the \'oil can bow\' used probably in a dozen films (not including how much I\'ve used it). I\'m sure all his new computer based stuff will be fabulous

I don\'t have Metamorphosis, but I use DR1&2 every day. They\'re just about indispensable for our work, but more for sfx and textures than drumloops. I love lots of the drum loops, but I tend to want to use just a small group over and over - just not enough choices in certain areas.

If drum loops is your need, I\'d look closer at Metamorphosis or Stylus. That\'s all they do, so you\'ll get way more variety.

For game music, I think Percussive Adventures could be just the thing. Most of the tracks availabe in Percussive Adventures give you option to use the full set of instruments playing on the track or pair it down to different combinations of the instruments. There are quite a few that would be considered \"ambient\". The demo is a very good example of the some of the tracks.
