Is it possible to delete pages after a .pdf file is created
with a notation program?

I have created the .pdf file, but I couldn't delete pages
before I created it because of "optimizing" the score. Didn't
want to spend a lot of time unoptimizing, etc.

There's got to be a way to do this. Also, what is a PDF-X
file that Finale creates?

I believe you need the production version of Acrobat instead of the simple reader in order to delete pages.

Usually, a pdf print module is similar to the regular print option in that you should be able to select a range of pages to print.

If that's not possible, copy the notation file to another name, open it and strip out the pages you don't want, and print as a pdf.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I will try to "delete" as
you mentioned by using a "page range."

I tried deleting pages before and after my PDF content,
but when I did, staves began disappearing. I didn't want
to unoptomize and then print a PDF as it would be too
time-consuming. I know a straight unoptimized file would
be the way to go in which to delete pages.

I guess "optimize" is Finale's way of hiding empty staves on a given page?

If so, you could make a copy, un-optimize the copy, strip the pages, optionally re-optimize the result, and then print to pdf. Unless, as you say, un-optimizing is too much work. This work is done on a page by page basis in Overture and isn't too bad to reverse, especially as it's a "work copy" that will be tossed, but I have no idea how much effort is involved with Finale.

Some other options:

Install a pdf printer: you can print any page, a given range, etc, like in real printer, then the pdf printer driver will save it as a pdf file. My prefered one is "PDFCreator"

You can purchase the Adobe pdf editor, but there are several ways to do simple editions, like discard unused pages, join several files in a single one, for free. I remember to try it some time ago, and it worked, an online PDF editor, that is free:

There are others free pdf editors out there, but i never tryed them, so i dont know if they do the job. I believe that even CorelDraw can manage them, but not sure.

Darwin:

You win the prize. I did just what you suggested after I read
your first post about the "print" function and page-range area.

I tried your unoptimized exercise, but it didn't work as it was
a bear trying to get everything back the way it was after
I deleted the pages BEFORE the fugue started. So, this is
what I did:

Left everything OPTIMIZED
Highlighted every page after the fugue ended and activated
the "delete measure stack" feature. This erased all the pages
after the fugue.

Then, I took your suggestion about using the RANGE feature on
the "print" page and started with page 5. Since the part after
the fugue was deleted, I now had only the fugal pages to include
in my PDF. It was a super learning exercise as I had never created
a PDF before. It just excited the heck out of me (like a kid with a
new toy).

Good you can solve your problem!
Just for the record, wanted to say that the "pdf printer" is not a hardware printer. Is a software that allow you to save to pdf files from any program that is able to print. And you need to pay for it, since is free.

Rhap, I presume you are on a Mac?
Finale does not, of its own, have any functionality for writing to PDF.
This would be a feature of your OS, included with Macs.
For PC users, a second prgramme is required to write to PDF.

When you "print", you choose the PDF writer.

In the "print" dialogue window, there should be little boxes written "page range".

In those boxes you can tell Finale to print FROM which page, and TO which page. For example, if you enter 3 and 7, it will print pages 3 through 7.

Finale also allows you to print individual pages, out of sequence.

A tiny bit further down in the Print dialogue, there should be a wide horizontal space for entering page numbers. here you can enter page numbers, with commas between: like "1, 3, 4, 6, 10-20, 25, 30"

The example I just put would print pages 1, 3, 4, 6, then all of pages 10 through 20, then page 25 and 30.

As you can see, Finale has quite a few ways of dealing with printing pages.

I havn't read the whole thread, so maybe another had mentioned this.

Cutepdf is a free pdf-writer, but with cutepdf pro (ca $50), you can delete and reorder pages, and more.

You can buy Adobe Acrobat, but that costs hundreds of dollars and it's usually overkill.

My favorite free PDF creation utility for Windows is BullZip.

There are many third-party inexpensive programs for editing PDFs on Windows.

Mac OS X has printing and editing utilities built-in, such as the Preview application.

There are also some commercial third-party applications for the Mac that work quite well. PDF Pen is recommended.

OpenOffice.org can convert its own word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and drawing files as PDFs, but it can't perform any editing functions beyond that.
