There's been some talk in the forums about trombone slides (portamento or pitch bend), but nothing really deep (at least that I could find searching).
Does anyone know of any sources for recorded solo trombone bits that I could use to model slide behavior? The only one I have is from a film score I did a year ago, and that ws a typical comedic slide.
What I'm really looking for are the idiosyncratic "stylings" used in R & B, funk rock, jazz and fusion tidbits that I can model (i.e., James Pankow, etc.).

Pankow is a great example for rock/pop. The only other style that comes to mind is Dixieland jazz which uses a style of trombone playing called "tailgaiting" or "tailgate trombone". In that style of playing it's all about the slide. Look for a recording of a tune called "Hold That Tiger" for a classic example.

Tiger Rag – "The Song That Shakes the Southland" – is Clemson University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clemson_University)'s familiar fight song since 1942 and is performed at all Tiger sporting events, pep rallies and parades.

Pat,
for modeling slide trombone behavior I suggest giving this video a careful look. Do exactly what the man in the video does...

The best simulation of this I've seen was done by our own DPDAN- and he did it in post processing with DP (Digital Performer.) He didn't do it in MIDI if memory serves but did it with DP's audio capabilities. Maybe he will weigh in.
