Katie Stam - daughter of a fellow music teacher in our school system and my choral supervisor - won tonight.
She is the real deal - a very sweet girl and we are very excited!
I watched her in many musicals and she is very talented.
Whenever I spoke to her she was just the nicest kid - great parents too!
She will do a great job as Miss America and we are proud!
Way to go Katie!

What does a Miss America actually do? Do they get given responsibilities or are they just to be a role model for other young people?

Man, if Franklin were not such a happenin' town, and if I didn't live 15 min walk from my job, I'd pull up stakes and head for Seymour in a flash.
Congrats to Katie & Seymour (sounds like a wedding:wow:)
I can just see the sign on Highway 11 now...

What a wonderful thing, Charles! Our new Miss America is certainly a beautiful young lady, and it's great to hear that you know her and have a high opinion of her. Sounds like the whole country should be proud of her representing our spirit and ideals. You should be very proud!

These days, being a role model for young people is a heady responsibility!:)

Does she like traveling, reading, meeting people, world peace and horses?

Katie will not be anything like the "world peace" kind of Miss America. A very intelligent and thoughtful girl who will be a spokesperson for several community causes. She give the term "beauty pageant" a good name.
A very impressive young lady - not an airhead beauty.
She will be on a very busy schedule all year long with speaking engagements - talking to schools, community groups, churches and a lot more.

Good going, Charles - I am glad to see you responding so well about Katie in her newly won leadership role.
I'm sure you didn't mean this literally "...Katie will not be anything like the 'world peace' kind of Miss America..." Because I'm sure she has intelligent interest in the cause for peace as well as the rest of the serious issues concerning current world conditions.
I understand you were using a phrase with negative connotations ("a world peace kind of Miss America") as a way of responding to the folks here who apparently wanted to sneer about the Miss America program. I just wanted to gently point out that we shouldn't lose sight of how being advocates for world peace doesn't make people "airheads."
I'm very impressed with Katie, and I want to thank you for pointing her out to us. I'm afraid the pageant had slipped by this year without me noticing!

From the rest of the world - I wonder if we'd miss America

Randy - you understood me correctly. When people think of a "beauty queen" - now they automatically think of the girl on YouTube with her "world peace" comment.
World peace is a good goal.
Would the world miss Miss America?
The prestige of that program has lessened over the past few years for sure.
It really is more about being a scholarship program - Katie is getting $50,000 for her education. And it is about supporting very worth causes like the Children's Network - and much more.
So . . . . I guess the world may or may not notice or care - but Katie will represent America very well. I understand the cynicism from many though.

Considering you're on the site for a USA company, I think you would miss us, buckshead.
From the USA (there is no country called "America") to the rest of the world, here's one citizen hoping we can again become a country you can trust and feel welcoming to.

I think that is wonderful news. Many tend to diss the Miss America pageant, but mostly because of bad PR. It is actually a very important role to be a spokesperson. Almost like a non-political ambassador.

Why not celebrate and applaud youthful beauty, talent and intelligence?
We certainly go nuts over a bunch of guys who meet on a field to play with a ball.

Good one, John! I'll take watching a beauty pageant (using the old-fashioned term) over watching football any day! ;)

I think beauty pageants have always been suspect because they emphasize beauty over all other attributes. My daughter always thought they were pretty stupid events.
But my daughter has done modeling for major media before as she is very tall and attractive. Maybe because the money was a sure thing.
But I'm sure they serve a useful purpose. More emphasis on those other attributes helps to keep outer beauty in perspective.

Ah - OK then. You had me worried there for a second. ;)
Would the world miss Miss America?
I dunno. The only person from my town (pop 10,000) that i can think of at the moment is Charles Babbage, the inventor of the computer - and he didn't enter any beauty pageants as far as I know. He went nuts in the end though.

Oo-er. Have you mentioned this to anyone else?

Your daughter shows more maturity than some of the older males on this thread in my view. :D
