View Full Version : SAM Trumpet Section Samples out as freeware !

Hello,
You may remember the orchestral trumpet samples we\'ve recorded almost 6 months ago: 3-player trumpet section, with a posted forum demo of the Chicken Run theme...
This project has been on hold for a while (with the test samples in hypersleep on my hd) but has now been picked up again.
This is what\'s going to happen:
-------------------------------
FREEWARE TRUMPETS
-----------------
The trumpet samples we\'ve now finished will be downloadable for free. These are the samples from the TEST-research session. We did a lot of processing and tried to fix the two main problems (tuning and scoops) as best as we could. In our opinion, the sampled performances by the players from these tests aren\'t good enough for commercial distribution, but are still very useful! To us, the test has served its purpose and we will start planning for final sessions with better players (see horns below).
http://www2.hku.nl/~maarte2/sampatch (\"http://www2.hku.nl/~maarte2/sampatch\") is the download site. Download the rar files by choosing \"Save target as...\" then change the .htm extension into the RAR extension, either being .rar .r00 or .r01. Go put them samples to use! http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif
The patch layout:
Trumpet Main, keyswitches:
- C Long note 1 (2 vel. zones)
- C# Long note 2 (2 vel. zones, alternative)
- D Portato 1 (2 vel. zones, 1.5 secs)
- D# Portato 2 (2 vel. zones, 1.5 secs, hard attack)
- E Portato 3 (2 vel. zones, 0.8 secs)
- F Staccato (2 vel. zones)
- F# Staccatissimo (2 vel. zones)
Trumpet SFX: some trumpet fx and clusters.
UPCOMING FRENCH HORNS
---------------------
For the trumpet test samples we used some of the theories and issues from
the brass \"manifesto\", posted earlier on this forum.
We\'ve decided to leave these test samples as they are, and turn our
attention to the sampling of the french horns section instead, for our final
recording session. We think new french horn samples will be more useful than
trumpet samples.
Pre-production will start now. Recordings will take place in March.
Hope this information is helpful.

Very nice gesture, I guess you\'ll get a lot of downloads! Maybe you want to measure this (logfile on the webserver) as an indication of how badly everyone\'s hoping for that holy grail stuff...
Btw, saw your new website today. Very nice and effective!
RE the horn section: are you considering to make different selections or splits (e.g. 2 + 4)? I mean 4 horns unison is a marvelous sound, but IMHO you shouldn\'t use them to create or play 3 or 4 note chords.
I realize that this topic is a kind of jungle... and maybe it\'s not really relevant with respect to just having a new, great set of instruments.
Success!!
Peter
PS: where are you going to record? Utrecht?

Are we talking gig files or wav files to create our own gig files?

We\'re talking about a complete GIG file, programmed and loadable. I listed the dimension keys and sampled articulations in the first post.

Download the rar files by choosing \"Save target as...\" then change the .htm extension into the RAR extension, either being .rar .r00 or .r01.
Their seems to be some service to the network right now (slow D/L speeds), hopefully this will be fixed soon.
Have fun!

Maarten,
Thank you for this generous gift to the GS community. I\'m downloading at the moment, it is still quite slow (but I don\'t know how many other DLs are taking place, and you ARE in a long way from California http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif
Can\'t wait to hear these in context.

Distance doesn\'t seem to matter: I\'m very close to this location and the D/L goes at around 64kbit. I don\'t care, I have a permanent connection and am also VERY curious about Maarten\'s product and projects.
Thanks Maarten!

What is an .rar file, and what do we do with it once it\'s downloaded?

Download WinRAR to unpack it. http://www.google.com/search?q=winrar (\"http://www.google.com/search?q=winrar\")

My first impression is that this program is very usable as an addition to other brass libraries (I\'ve done a short comparison with AO and DD). I will probably shorten the release time a little (and add some release to my AO sections!).
There\'s quite some room in the samples compared with the very dry DD trumpet. This might call for different reverb layers in a mix, but I guess that\'s a desirable approach anyway (for professional mixes).
Thanks again Maarten!

Peter,
You\'re theoretically correct that distance doesn\'t matter on the net, but other issues can interfere. I was D/Ling at about 3K! This is about a 2400 baud modem speed. THis morning I went back and was getting a respectable 75K, so I guess either the problems were resolved or there is less traffic.
In either case, I can\'t wait to try these out! Thanks again, Maarten.

Yikes! Super slow even for DSL. I\'ll wait.
Cool logo by the way on your page.
Never mind the download problem, I re-D/L the corrupted parts (much faster this morning) and it works fine.
I like it, thanks Maarten! I can imagine these lifting an energetic track.

Thanks very much for making these available Maarten!
I\'m having a little trouble downloading them though. I\'ve got Winrar 2.9, but IE5.5 keeps wanting to download the samples as html files. Anyone got a clue?

Simon,
Thanks but that\'s exactly what I do. When the \'save as\' window comes up, the file type winodw defaults to HTML. If I select \'all types\' instead, on the transfer progress window I can see that it\'s being saved as a .htm file. Bizarre.
LHong, I think the version of the program you pointed me to is the one I\'m using - Winrar 2.9. I haven\'t had any problems downloading from ftp sites in the past (That big Akai piano trickled down from the Akai ftp site without a hassle).

Wow, love the portatos! Thanks for this, Maarten, all things considered, (bandwidth included) I think this might be one of the nicest gestures I\'ve seen in a long time.
They really do sound pretty useful at a glance, and I think I can use em on a short film I\'m scoring right now (which, ironically, is supposed to help pay for better brass...)
As far as the CRC issues go, I used WinAce and it kept wanting for me to specify the paths to the other two files \".r00 & .r01\" It took me a few minutes to realize that I needed to not only rename the extensions, but the filename had to be correct too. I believe they should be something like this:
SAM Trumpet Section TESTrar.rar
SAM Trumpet Section TESTrar.r00
SAM Trumpet Section TESTrar.r01
It still gave me an odd error when I finished putting them back together, but the .gig is totally usable with no errors that I can find stemming from recompiling.
So, from his page:
Right click the first file and choose \"Save As\" Then rename the file ext .rar, .r00, and .r01 as they appear on the page BEFORE saving them to your harddrive. (I learned the hard way that they\'d overwrite eachother if you do not do this)
Once the downloading is finished, rename the files as I specified above, because it will still save it as a .htm file.
Once they are renamed, use WinAce (you can get this from www.downloads.com (\"http://www.downloads.com\") ) to put em back together. And everything should work fine, despite any weird error it gives you.
Anyway, really awsome of you guys to do this, thanks alot.

Chadwick,
Possibility is because the download files have \"space\" characters, which might cause some troubles on certain Browser like Netscape-Browser or something wrong on your IE5.5 setting?
Anyway, Try the \"Download Accelerator 5.0\"
http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-3282264-108-54862.html?bt.35622.10013..dl-54862 (\"http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-3282264-108-54862.html?bt.35622.10013..dl-54862\")
To use this as the default for download apps. It would be helpful.
Hope this helps,
Long

This is excellent! The Best Free Trumpet Ensemble in the World! Also sounds good layered with Dean & Vitous. Recommend pitch shifting up an octave, shorten release times to .15 sec or so and add a filter mod wheel control ( lowpass, min. cutoff 30) and also lower the dynamic range.(velocity response). Will cut through any busy orchestra very nicely.
Thank you Maarten!

Agree with all Bruce said. Octave shifting actually sounds ok. Didn\'t expect it to but it does. I like these alot. I think there is something I might be able to do about problem areas in teh samples. I\'ll take some time out to do it later (too much editing lately). There is ALOT of variety in attacks which helps, and the distance made for a great \"wide\" sound. they take extremely well to reverbs. These are awesome samples to have for anyone. Thanx Marteen, looking forward to the Horns, will beta test if ever you need one http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif
BTW I\'ve tryed layering these with AO, DD, and QLB, all different types of layering works. DD is good with it, but if you play the fff samples over these there is too much sizzle in DD. QLB works well as well, but might require some adjustments on the attack envelope..still it adds some nice lower mids to the mix. AO does about the same as QLB.

Really...I am an Idiot
I got all 3 parts last night. WinRAR says:
1 SAM Trumpet Section TEST.rar: Packed data CRC failed in SAM Trumpet Section TEST.gig. Volume is broken
2 SAM Trumpet Section TEST.r00: Packed data CRC failed in SAM Trumpet Section TEST.gig. Volume is broken
3 CRC failed in SAM Trumpet Section TEST.gig. File is broken
I wonder what went wrong? Maybe it doesn\'t like my name?

Hey Guys,
I downloaded the files. They were saved rar, r00 and r01. The had the IE (html) exetension. I changed the exetension to RAR...
Thats fine...the first file extracts but then WinRAR keeps asking for (r00.h00)
I have never seen this .h00 before. I tried to rename the file to what Winrar was asking for but that did not work.
Any thoughts? I cant download again...I am on 56k at home. I downloaded at work and burned files to a disc (dsl connection there)

01-18-2002, 07:18 PM
Try using WinAce from downloads.com (its a fairly small download I think) and follow the steps in my above post that I had to take for it to work. It never asked me for a .h00 file. Just be sure to rename the three files exactly as I listed them above, otherwise you\'ll be stuck while the program asks you to specify a path to file names that do not exist.
Good luck

Hi francis
How is your directory settings - is it
set to show the full file name?
Otherwise when you rename a file it
will just add your extension to the
name, not the extension - eg.
test.htm becomes test.rar.htm - you just
can\'t see the last part.
By the way - what is the OS your running,
Win9x or W2K?

Nice gift.

I jsut did a James bond type stinger with these trumpets, and QLB trumpet falls, and QLB trombones.
AWESOME!
These things remind me a bit of QLB trumpets but they dont have as sharp of an attack on the long notes, which is why I like them. I also like the fact that they aren\'t so perfect. The movement in the notes actually gives it a nice live feel. If you\'re doing a full brass section piece these suckers liven it up a bit http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif
Thanks again Marteen.

How to get the SAM trumpet samples
As said, the link is still working: http://www2.hku.nl/~maarte2/sampatch/ (\"http://www2.hku.nl/~maarte2/sampatch/\")
You may have problems if you just click on the file links. I just re-checked and the rar-files got displayed as hexadecimal codes in my browser...
To summarize it again (sorry for any overkill):
- Click on a file link with the right mouse button (MSIE browser);
- Select the option \"Save Target as...\"
- In the file dialog, change the file extension, from \"HTM\" to \"Rar\", \"R00\" or \"R01\", respectively;
- Click OK, start downloading the file;
- Repeat for the other files, don\'t forget to change the extension first;
Then use WinRar to re-combine the original file by opening the first file. Should would work. This is the WinRar homepage:
http://www.rarsoft.com/ (\"http://www.rarsoft.com/\")
Cheers,
Peter
