View Full Version : "Jai Ha" to all!!

I've found now what I can call "world music". The diverse instrumentation from a Sitar from India, all the way to Taiko Drums from Japan, "Jai Ho" thrills me viscerally with the strong rhythmic thrusts from the percussion, the stringed instruments, to the very muslim-esque (if that's an effective description) vocals. There's even a "rock" trap-set providing rhythmic underpinnings in some sections, along with rhythm guitar. I just wished that I'd DVR'd the Oscars.
It's very exciting, and all I want to do is hear more.
The only small downside is that all the available recordings of "Jai Ha" are severely compressed, robbing what should be the intensely broad dynamic range in the performance. Maybe we'll be graced later with an un-compressed version, with as-they-be dynamics!!)(~

Hmmm. I guess I'm in the minority here. That is, unless folks here have no idea what the heck I'm talking about.
The song "Jai Ho" is the Oscar-winning song from "Slumdog Millionaire", by A. R. Rahman, a composer from India.
If this work IS well-known here, and gets this lack of response, then I have to say that I was hoping for a little better reception of diverse works.

While at Skywalker Studios we saw a screening of Slumdog Millionaire. The film, and especially the music, was fantastic.
The instrumentation certainly was diverse and it was quite an unusual mashup from around the world. Bollywood meets Hollywood and beyond. This song eminently deserves the global praise it has received.
You may be interested to know that some of the instruments you hear in "Jai Ho" will be in the upcoming World Instrument library.

mashup is a good description. i've been exposed to lots of contemporary indian music via a friend who brought back tons of cd and cassette(!) compilations from his trips to india. it really is a kitchen sink art form: traditional indian instruments and styles meshed with their interpretation of just about every western style under the sun (although these days mostly house/dance music)...the indian film industry has been going strong for over 30 years now, and iirc bollywood actually produces more films per year than hollywood...most of them musicals.
so when does the beta for garritan world instruments start?;)

Everybody sing along! :
Jai Ho!
Aaja aaja jind shamiyaane ke taley
Aaja zari waale neele aasmaane ke taley
Jai Ho!
Ratti ratti sachchi maine jaan gawayi hai
Nach Nach koylon pe raat bitaayi hai
Ankhiyon ki neend maine phoonkon se udaa di
Gin gin taarey maine ungli jalayi hai
Eh Aaja aaja jind shamiyaane ke taley
Aaja zari waale neele aasmaane ke taley
Baila! Baila!
Jai Ho!
Chakh le, haan chakh le, yeh raat shehed hai
Chakh le, haan rakh le,
Dil hai, dil aakhri hadd hai
Kaala kaala kaajal tera
Koi kaala jaadu hai na?
Aaja aaja jind shamiyaane ke taley
Aaja zari waale neele aasmaane ke taley
Jai Ho!
Kab se haan kab se jo lab pe ruki hai
Keh de, keh de, haan keh de
Ab aankh jhuki hai
Aisi aisi roshan aankhein
Roshan dono heerey hain kya?
Aaja aaja jind shamiyaane ke taley
Aaja zari waale neele aasmaane ke taley
Jai Ho!

Jai Ho Jai Ho
(Hallelujah ..OH Hallelujah !)
Ratti Ratti Sachi Maine Jaan Gavayi Hai
(NIGHT AFTER NIGHT I TRULY DIED..)
Nach Nach Koylo Pe Raat Bitayi Hai
(SPENT THE NIGHTS DANCING ON HOT COALS..)

I received the Bluray Friday. Now I can say I've seen the movie.
Wow!
The entire soundtrack fits sooooo well.
Glad I made the connection.
