View Full Version : Your Thoughts and Prayers for the Garritans...

My Friends,

Some of you have been wondering where I have been recently. This is not the kind of update I wish to write, and I do wish I had happier news to report. But there is something very important I need to share with you.

Recently my wife, Marianne, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Many of you know Marianne as the warm, cheerful voice you hear when you call us; and she is a partner and part of the very backbone of our company.

Cancer strikes almost every family, and I know that many of you, your families or loved ones have been directly affected by this disease. Although there are more cancer survivors every day, it's uncertain ground and a terrifying diagnosis to face. One never fully knows the outcome or consequences, even after surgery and often lengthy treatment.

But cancer can be beaten -- and we need to do everything in our power to fight this disease. You don't take halfway measures with this, because there's often no second chance; and we will be devoting every effort over the forthcoming months to that end.

Marianne is receiving excellent medical attention, of course. But we also need your support, the prayers and strength and positive thoughts of our friends and family in this community. We truly believe caring thoughts and prayers help.

The next several months are going to be very difficult, and I must devote substantially all of my time toward helping Marianne have the best chances of beating this; so if you post or email and don't receive an answer from me, please understand. My fulltime job right now is helping Marianne get well.

Usually at this time of year we have a holiday sale, a newsletter, announcements, NAMM plans, and so on -- but they may have to wait this time. Things will not be operating normal for a short time and much of daily operations will be on hold.

Dan is taking care of the Christmas album. Tony, Jeff, the moderators and others will pick up much of the slack. What we have in this forum is something special, and one of the best things you can do for us is keep the community thriving and at its best during this time. Be kind. Take care of each other. This is a family.

We don't know what the outcome will be. But with Marianne's strength and attitude, the best doctors, proper treatment, good care, and providence -- together with your healing thoughts and prayers -- there is a chance at beating this.

I'll be here when I can. And when things are back to normal, we'll be stronger than ever.

Please keep the Garritan family in your thoughts and prayers.

Wishing you and yours all the best,

Gary

Gary, you and Marianne and your family will continue to not only be in my prayers, but also on my mind almost constantly.

Sometimes life isn't fair, BUT GOD is, my family and I will trust Him for her strength and healing, and rest for you.

Peace,
Dan

Gary, I can only offer you and Marianne my most profound wishes of a speedy and full recovery.

No one can expect anything less from you than your full devotion to the most important person in your life. It is completely understandable. Please give her your complete support, and know that - whether we are far or near - we are there for you both, in thought and in prayer, and hopefully our moral support will help.

Hugs and kisses and anything else we can send your way to help.

Marianne,

I, too, offer my sincere wishes. I know a person who is presently suffering from pancreatic cancer, and it's quite depressing to watch the fight. Just keep pushing to survive and you will survive. You also have an entire community of people, many of who you have given support to, willing to offer support of a different variety in return.

Don't ever look at life as bleak. There is always a better moment just around the corner.

Gary,

Make sure Marianne has the best doctors available. And do not worry about taking time off to be with her. Give her as much support as you can. We are here to help not as a community of users, but as friends. You two will get through this. You both have the ambition along with the added support of many. I also offer you my sincerest wishes.

Best,
Colton

Gary and Marianne

Please know that you will be in our Family's prayers as well.

Believe it or not, but I know precisely how you must be feeling at this time. I had a similar situation with my wife. We were told not to expect her to survive her surgery (a tumor had intertwined along her spinal cord and was causing paralysis). They told us that in the low possibility that she survived, never to expect her to come home. If she did come home, she would still be a paraplegic.
But miracles can and DO happen. After a lot of prayers by a LOT of people, when she went in for the surgery (a biopsy), instead of a turmor, they found her spinal cord was severely inflamed. (though - 4 separate batteries of MRI scans by 3 separate teams in 3 different hospitals - all showed conclusively a tumor). She did survive the surgery, and after a long recovery, learned to walk again. She is now living a very normal life with some medication. (she was diagnosed with Nervous System Lupus a year after all this)
Whatever the outcome of the future, know that we are praying for you.

Your friend,

Jerry Wickham

I'm sorry to hear this news Gary.

My mother recently has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer also, so I am very aware of what this can do to a person. It almost seems as if this dreaded disease has grown to epidemic proportions.

Remember that our Creator has a second name: YHWH Tikvah (I AM Hope).
I wish you, your wife and your family much strength in the coming period.

As a cancer survivor myself, I know that it can be defeated. If an old dude like me can do it, I know that Marianne can do the same, since she's young enough to be my daughter. :)

Hang in there, Marianne! We are with you all the way.

Gary,

It hapenned to my wife and me mid-2005. And her cancer has been defeated, so it can be done.

I have been through this, so I can say it is perfectly normal that you devote as much time to Marianne as you can. This is very important for her recovery.

Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I wish Marianne a complete recovery as soon as possible.

Gary -

Most certainly, our thoughts and prayers are offered for Marianne and you. It is heartwarming to read the posts, here, of support for your family. It is equally heartwarming to read the role you are providing yourself to your loving wife. As you know, Marianne has quite the job ahead of her as she deals with the cancer, the chemo and the other treatments. Your full-time support will be instrumental in ensuring her comfort, and that she receives appropriate medical care.

You are a good soul, Gary. Peace and much Healing to Marianne and to you as you work together through this unfortunate journey.

And. . . please don't be afraid to ask for help from your friends, here. Although I am sure that you will be provided the appropriate education needed to understand the medical treatments offered Marianne, I and others will be more than happy to further explain the treatments or be used as a sounding board for you to just "sound off" if/when Marianne experiences some of the more unpleasant side-effects of those treatments.

Again. . . Peace and Healing to your family. . .

Well, Gary, all I can offer is to tell you that cancer can be overcome. It will not be easy, sometimes it will be quite unpleasant, but it can be overcome. I think it very important that even during the bad times, that you do not give up hope. My nurses did no expect me to live, and my doctor only expected 5 years, but I did not believe them, and thanks to my determination and my partner's therapeutic hamburgers and a good supply of French Roast Coffee, here I sit 12 years later, very healthy, no trace of cancer, and I had two types at the same time, both rather aggressive. So, the message is, if I can do it, so can Marianne. I suspect that it will be harder on you than on her, and suggest that you keep yourself as busy as possible when not attending to your wife. Keeping cool is of the essence.

Dear Gary and Marianne,

I am so sorry to hear of the challenging time you are both facing.

To Marianne, you have a great man there. He will be there to love and support you through this time. Know that we of this "Garritan community" will be there for you as well with our thoughts and prayers.

To Gary, you are a wonderful human being. I am so grateful for what you have done for this community and for me personally. I would never have been able to create the lovely melodies over the years if it weren't for your creative endeavors. We of this community are here for you, Gary. And if there is anything I can do for you way out here in Milwaukee, please let me know. Please take care.

So sorry to hear this news. Cancer's a tough one, but Marianne just needs to be tougher. I've been taking care of my mom with an aggressive colon cancer, but she's got the stuff to deal with it and a positive attitude when lesser men would would be crying in the dark alone. The positive attitude does so much to keep this at bay! Keep the spirits high and know we're here for you when you need it.

All the best to Marianne and your whole family in this phase of your life that certainly is an inquiry. We have (had) a case of cancer in our own family but it seems to turn out quite well now. The best thing one can do besides medication is to advance positiveness and focus to the essentials of life, to give joy and to receive joy.

All the best again

Ahh, I was wondering why I haven't been able to find you on Skype recently. I've dealt with too much cancer in my own family recently (including over Thanksgiving), and I know how it weighs on everyone involved.

Even if you can only help by "being there", that's exactly what you must do.

Best wishes to you all,

Each and everyone one of us are going through tough times right now, but God is getting ready to bless you in a way that only He can. Keep the fath.

Father, I ask You to bless my friends, relatives and those that I care deeply for, who are reading this right now. Show them a new revelation of Your love and power. Holy Spirit, I ask You to minister to their spirit at this very moment. Where there is pain, give them Your peace and mercy. Where these is self-doubt, release a renewed confidence through Your grace. Where there is need, I ask you to fulfill their needs. Bless their homes, families, finances, their goings and their comings. In Jesus' precious name. Amen.

I hope this does not offend anyone. It is a prayer that was sent to me and I have read it almost daily for the past two plus years. It is the first thing I thought of when I read Gary's post about the chellenge he and his family is facing.

Gary I pray that the whole host of Heaven keep there full attention and grace of the Most High will hold you and your wife in the palm of his hands pressed lovingly next to his heart.

One of my musician-friends survived a terrible cancer. The chances for recovery were very low so it all looked really bad. Yet he managed to win with cancer and the doctors had no doubt it was thanks to his very strong mind, positive thinking and an extremely "stubborn" will to live that helped a lot making this possible.

So Gary, please stay strong and try to do everything you can to support your wife in fighting this, because keeping her mind strong at all times is what can have a huge impact on the effectivenes of the medicine and the whole curing process.

I wish you both all the best and keep you in my thoughts,
Henry

Dear Gary and Marianne -

I'm sorry to hear of your challenges - I know very well by seeing similar things in many families (during the last 20 years as a church musician) how difficult it can be.

I also know (and have witnessed) that prayer, the support of family and friends, good medical care and keeping a good positive attitude is very often a winning recipe for beating cancer.

Know that you all are in my prayers!

My best,

- Jonathan

Hello Gary and Marianne;
I too would like to offer you my sincerest hope for a speedy and complete recovery. My spouse had a similar diagnosis 5 1/2 years ago, breast cancer, plus several dozen lymph nodes involved. They gave her the maximum possible treatment in terms of the chemo and radiation. Some of the treatments were done at the Kingston, Ontario hospital, several hours away and required her to stay there for nearly 4 weeks. She had a "radical double mascectomy". Yet, today, she is active and strong again and has resumed her teaching career, full-time.
When I first learned of her cancer, that night, I felt as though I had come face to face with a bottomless abyss, as I considered and dwelt upon the unthinkable.
The experience has changed our view of life and made us thankful for each day.

I wish you both the strength, courage and love you will need to face this challenge. Please take heart in my story, and yes, think positively.

My very best regards,
sd cisco

My prayers are with you both, I have spoken with both of you on the telephone, and indeed you are both the "voice" of the company, can't imagine it any other way.

If I might offer a positive thought... my mother and one of my cousins were both diagnosed with cancer many years ago, the absolute worst moment in both cases was learning of the diagnosis, but the rest of it can be pretty harrowing too. No, that wasn't the positive part, but both of them are still in complete remission many many years (I can't even tell you how many any more) later. I also have a brother in law who has faced not one, but two different forms of cancer, and he beat them both. His is more recent, but we're confident the worst is over.

A positive attitude, coupled with the best medical care<G>, and some faith... I'll pray for all three for you!

Not much I can say that hasn't already been said. It looks like no one is too much concerned with product schedules right now, so take heart that your distraction from your business is understood and even applauded.

Funny, just a day or two before first reading this I was thinking to myself what a remarkable individual you are, Gary, and the grace with which you run this forum. Occasionally things are said here about you and your company that, if it were me and mine, I would flame on! But, you handle these situations with grace and dignity, and almost always your friends are the first to interject, which is a mark of the kind of friend you are to them.

Lastly, thank you Samantha for having the courage to not just say you will be praying, but to actually offer a prayer right here on-line. Good on you, and I am inspired by it.

Father, reach down right now and bring your perfect peace to the Garritan household. Use this time to draw them closer to each other, and to draw them closer to the Divine. May they take strength in Your presence and in the love they have for each other. Continue to send your children to minister to them, that on the other side of this test, they will have a testimony.

Amen.

Gary and Marianne, i am also so very stunned by this and will certainly pray for you two and get prayer groups to pray for you, i believe you will get though this and will have a victory. I also pray that God will let you feel His presence so you will know that when you call on Him, He will answer you, He has you under His wing, and will be your shelter like in Psalm 91, and will be with you every day.

X
David

Psalm 91

91:1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say [1] to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my refuge [2]—
10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.

14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name.
15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”

Gary, Marianne -

I know firsthand how scary this kind of situation can be, so I thought I'd share a happy ending with you. Several years ago, my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer (she's smoked all her life) with a fairly sizable tumor in one lung. Most of the doctors wanted to do surgery to remove the lung, but she wouldn't go for it. She didn't want to trade in quality of life for longevity.

Consequently, she ended up at Loma Linda getting a new leading edge procedure - proton radiation (think I got that right) - that essentially targets the damaged cells with extreme precision, leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. The results were incredible. In a relatively short period of time she was back to playing golf and living her life. Of course, she'll be keeping a close watch from here on out, but after many years the cancer has still not returned.

I can only echo everyone else's feelings when I say that this is the kind of happy ending that I envision for the two of you as well. I know I've been away for a while but nonetheless, let me know if there's anything I can do for you.

Thinking of you...

Tom Johnson

Gary

Gary, be strong, my friend. Know that Vicky and I are thinking of both of you and sending positive energy and if there is ANYTHING that you need help with, do not hesitate to ask.

Hang in there guys!

As a new year is close, I join all the members in wishing Gary and Marianne all the best for the 2010, and long years following.

5 years ago I joined the community, surprised personally by the humanity of Gary and his staff. We even had the chance of meeting in Frankfurt.

Then it's so natural now to feel part of a real group, and this moments are frequetly shared here, against the logic of pure business and pure topics.

Gary was close to all of us in similar moments, we can just be as close as possible to him now.

and I know... you will never give up.

Ga,
I don't know if my prayers are eoungh, I don't know if my thoughts are enough, but I'm with you, the same as when you were with me when I needed help. I should give everything for your happiness, my own life also, and if God give me the chance I should take the cancer instead of your wife. I would be missing only a composer, you would be missing for all composers.

Dear Gary, Marianne and family,
I just logged on to see how things were going with Marianne and am so very glad to hear the surgery went well! We need to still be sending good energy and prayers, though, I know -- so here's mine for the next phase(s) of treatment. I received my copies of the Christmas CD, thank you so much for doing this every year!

Lots of love,
Karen

Great news!!

next time I call, I will say I am Styxx.

And if I ever call, I'll say I'm snorlax.... in a VERY DEEP VOICE. ;-)

And when I call, I'll call collect, and say that I'm Karen. Then you could reverse the charges to Styxx, since you couldn't keep track of who to blame anymore.

Haven't been around for quite awhile, and saddened by the initial news, but very glad to hear the surgery went well.

May the recovery go very well.

The lack of non dynamic IP on phones can create problems, huh? :wow:

If you ever receive a bill for a 6 pack from Greece guess who's from! :p

Dear Marianne and Gary,

Having been away from Finale/Garritan community for a while, I had completely missed all this until tonight and feel so sorry.

Marianne, I wish you all good force to fight this. And no doubt: you have with Gary the best companion and support for it.

Again, all my good thoughts and sympathy

Hi Gary, I assume you are busy taking care of Marianne and she is up and about making you some coffee. :)
While I am not a coffee drinker, I bet hers is better than Starbucks!

So,... how is Marianne coping with her treatment?

I, like many, are still praying for your entire family.

Gary -

How is your wife doing? It's been 3+ months since any update on her progress. Your last activity on this bulletin board is noted to be 2+ weeks ago (March 3, 2010). To be very honest, this worries me!!

I can only begin to imagine the physical and emotional whirlwind that Marianne and you are facing. The aggressive cancer that you mention in your original post is worrisome to say the least. The treatments can be just as worrisome.

I wish to re-affirm to Marianne and you that you are dearly held in our thoughts and prayers. Please know that you are amongst caring friends and that you are not alone. A source of strength and solace can be found here.

Please know that thoughts and prayers for healing and peace of heart, mind, body and soul continue for Marianne and you.

Ted

Gary

I had NO IDEA about this.... my best hope for you and yours...

Dear Gary,

I'm still in shock and I shouldn't be as this thing happens all the time. But when it happens to such a warm and generous person as Marianne is, it's difficult to write words that sufficiently express the deep sorrow I'm feeling right now.
I'm not much of a praying person, but I will do my best, now.

Love

Bob De Celle
