Brassed Off with brass libraries!
What with everyone blowing their own trumpet so to speak ! http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif
Only joking...; in fact I\'m very keen on good sampled brass libraries.
However, it would also be nice to consider making sample libraries of rarely (if ever) sampled instruments.
Michiel Post is doing Post Church Bells, which he says is the worlds first sampled library dedicated to real church bells!
One of my suggestions for consideration is the Ondes Martenot. What\'s that ??? you may be thinking. Good examples of its sound can be heard in several of the mp3s from the Barry Gray Music of the Week site (http://pioneer.crc.paragould.ar.us/~adam/fab/C21/barrygraymusic.htm), especially in the Captain scarlet section of the page.
I\'m sure there are many other interesting intruments to consider; surely Nick Phoenix hasn\'t covered everything in his Quantum Leap Rare Instruments library ? http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif

I completely agree there! It seems to me that Nick is making a step in the right direction with his Rare Instruments release. The demo blew me away, but so did the price.
Nick, I realize that hiring these players on such exotic instruments isn\'t cheap, so I\'m not complaining! http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif Just feel a little sad that I cannot afford it atm.
I welcome any new sound library, no matter what instrument(s). Church bells sounds like a cool addition. But I\'m sure there are a few more exotic instruments that hasn\'t been covered in the already existing libraries such as heart of asia, africa and rare instruments, so keep sampling! http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif
What I would really like to see is a good cembalo and celesta. Some really old accordions (you know those that come complete with a worn out old man and a monkey) and a bent saw would be cool too. All kinds of new (and old) sounds would be nice to have!

I\'d love to see more \'strange sound\' type of CDs in Giga format like prepared pianos that are actually playable within a song.
Is it possible to tweak instruments out enough in the Giga editor to make them sound completely different or is the only answer to \'mixdown to audio\' then tweak the sounds out with plug-ins? I\'m geting tired of using the same sounds everybody has. I want to do some weird things to orchestral sounds and pianos and create my own sound. Can the Giga editor do this?
I sure do wish they had a manual for the Giga editor as well. I\'m sure there is so much I could do with it if I just knew how. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/frown.gif

Hi Thomas,
I\'m not sure which I\'d most prefer out of samples of a really old accordion or of the monkey ! http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif
Only joking...
I\'ve heard some very nice sounding accordions on Michiel Post\'s \"Post Accordions V2.0\" which is an Akai/EMU CD-ROM and may no longer be available. (Hopefully Michiel can update us on this).
Also, there is the new Classic Accordions CD-ROM from Bardstown Audio. The demos of it are lovely, but I\'m not shure the accordions on that are really old enough for what you may be looking for. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif
I have the (USB) Soundscan Volume 23 (Historical Instruments) CD-ROM which includes two accordions and a musette. However, I have not tried them yet.
Best regards

Thomas,
By cembalo you mean harpsichord (that\'s the usual meaning, but sometimes people use \"cembalo\" for \"cimbalom\")? I think Worra\'s harpsichord set works well, and it\'s inexpensive. I also like the XSample celesta (I forget which volume; it\'s on the same CD as the harp).

Sorry, yes you are right, that\'s Harpsichord! In Norway we say Cembalo. I\'m sorry if I confused you. Thank you for the tip. I will definitely check out those libraries you pointed out. As for monkey samples vs. old accordions, I would really like a sample of an old accordion being crushed on the head of that old man, by an angry bypasser (with distant monkey screams http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

There are several older accordion sounds on the two CD collection of \"Classic Accordions\" from Bardstown Audio.
I do not have any MP3 demos of these older accordions on our web site. In the next few days, I will create some MP3 Demos of these older sounding accordions and get them up on our web site. www.bardstownaudio.com. (\"http://www.bardstownaudio.com.\")
Thank you Nicholas for you compliments.

Are there any great sounding Cymbaloms/Cimbaloms out there for Giga? I have been thinking about doing one for a long while. I also would like to do the Glass Harmonica. There is a virtuoso here in the area who is quite good. But Cymbalom, I would love a great sounding one.

I\'d love to see a Dan Dean Eb Clarinet and Bb Contrabass Clarinet to complete the wind band woodwind section. I was shocked (in the best of ways) to see he\'s including a Euphonium on his brass disk. I really wish I could buy these collections right now, but I\'ll be happy with my new GigaPC for now.
It would also be great to see more specialized mallet percussion sounds. I urge anyone interested in making mallet percussion samples to listen to the music of wind band composer David Gillingham. He\'s composing with a lot of new subtle percussion timbres which I would love to include in my own compositions. Things like marimba rolls and strikes with extremely soft mallets (like a mallet wrapped in felt -- maybe even toilet paper! - so that when rolled you get a pure tone, with hardly any mallet noise at all), bowed Marimba, Vibes, and Crotales - Bass marimba. I recall a piece by another composer I played several years ago that had wine bottles filled with water to produce different pitches, struck with various mallets.
I\'m half tempted to try sampling a few of these oddities myself, with friends from my university band -- but maybe I should leave it to the pros. Or maybe they have been/will be done in a certain upcoming percussion library.... and maybe a DDSW 2.0 in the future? http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif

Interesting that you would mention the Bb ContraBass Clarinet...I will be doing some sort of update later to the DDSWW. I would include the Contra Bass Clarinet. People also want a vibrato clarinet. I have yet to hear a great sample of all the recorders. Other requests have been for Oboe d\'Amore. We discussed the A clarinet, but did not pursue it because of the closeness in timbre to the Bb Clarinet. The Eb...well that might be a different story.
Thanks,

For the guy who wants a prepared piano...there is one on Xsample percussion volume 10 or 11 (I forget).
Also, see my Wish List of a Complete World Instruments library.
As GigaDiga has said, there is a gaping whole in the market for a first class, complete 10-20 volume library of the instruments of the world.
That will get you some rare ones!!!
Enough strings, enough brass, enough electric guitar...how about world instruments!

Hi List!
Lot of questions in this topic.
Accordions. I made a whole cd with Accordions (Akai, Kurzweil and Giga). Check my online store for the details, see below. The Akai version is distributed by BigFishAudio in the US. The other versions can be obtained from my site www.postaudiomedia.com. (\"http://www.postaudiomedia.com.\") Go to the online store from there and look under the \"other\" category.
Harpsichords. I made 2 cd\'s. One with a French and a Flemish instrument. All notes sampled, no loops, release key action, all manual sampled (also the LUTE setting). Check www.biggagiggas.com (\"http://www.biggagiggas.com\") for details. There is a 3th cd coming: Fortepiano. The first piano. It is a harpsichord where hammers are applied (for the first time by Christophori) so that loud and soft (Forte and Piano) is possible. The Fortepiano had 3 velocity layers, no loops, all notes sampled, sustain pedal down samples, moderator pedal samples etc. This disc will come out soon.
Prepared piano. There is quite a nice collection of prepared piano sounds on my Post Piano SUite vol 1 disc, also at Biggagiggas.com where a demo in MP3 is available.
Celesta is also on Post Piano Suite vol 1.
Church Bells.! I\'m working on \"the Worlds First Tuned Church Bells\" library. It is ready for release in a couple of days. I\'ll keep this list posted.
I have other strange sounds in the pipe: junk percussion (not to be confused with the Audio CD JUNK PERCUSSION) that has great strange percussion stuff), Anvils (is available), and others...

Is it playable? I\'d like to actually be able to write melodies with it along with other instruments. I\'ve got the Xsample prepared piano and I can\'t really do anything with it because each note is in a weird microtonal sort of key and there are only about 5 notes that are like that on the \'screws\' preset, the rest are just piano effect sounds.
I heard the demo of the post prepared piano and it sounds kind of like a gamelan. Is it available in normal western tuning?
Thanks

ursatz: The Pianoforte is ready! It\'s a new way of playing the 18th century music. As a lot of people agree the grand piano is not the best instrument to play Hayden or others. I\'ll make a mp3 demo one of these next days. The cd is available in our online store via www.postaudiomedia.com. (\"http://www.postaudiomedia.com.\")
Damon: The prepared piano is never intended to play melodic material . Check John Cage Music for Prepared Piano, where you clearly hear the prepared piano is a un-tuned percussive instrument. There are however a couple of presets made from the prepared piano samples (in PostPianoSUite) that allow simple melodies to be played.

Hi Damon,
I think you\'re looking for something more like Total Piano, by Best Service. EastWest distributes it. That collection has many \"prepared\" versions which are chromatically mapped...not a typical application of prepared piano, but melodically useful.
