You have my warmest sympathy too. I studied neurological damage (a bit on the side), and I have a deep respect for the delicacy of our brain. Your recovery is remarkable. I hope it is a sign of very little damage. All the best.

Well, even with a stroke your language is still better than that of many others, haha.
Did the doctors tell you any reason where the stroke came from (other than the lentils)? :)

Karen,
I always find such news disturbing but not disheartening. I speak with some experience because I have been involved in the struggles of others close to me who have experienced brain injuries and strokes. The good news: All of them have successfully fought back, most to the point of virtually eliminating any significant impairment. My hope is that you continue that record of consistent recovery. The brain is a very resilient organ and re-routes functions in extraordinary ways. You are obviously both strong and courageous as your presence on this forum attests! All the very best to you.

Karen,
So sorry you've gone through this but glad to hear you're getting better already! I understand, having experienced one (or two) strokes over two years ago--on right side.
One thing helped above all else--HYPERBARIC OXYGEN. I feel it literally saved my life. I was terrified to leave the house, and the visual field was increasingly dark. The oxygen felt like an infusion of light and clarity. It immediately brings down the inflammation in the brain tissue surrounding the original site, so blockages are eased, worsening is stopped and healing can occur. One thing the medical orthodoxy in this country doesn't know is that the pressure needed for the brain is less than for other things. There's probably a smaller center near you, a fraction of the cost of ones in hospitals. Even a few sessions can help, the sooner the better. Were it not for the oxygen, I wouldn't be writing this right now.
Since then, I've also done extensive research in beneficial supplementation, often hours a day. There's a small list of ones that have truly proven themselves over time. So please feel free to contact me by phone or email. (If this is already a bit too much, I understand!)
And here's some encouragement for you: a good friend had a stroke on the left side, like you. At first he couldn't speak at all. But with retraining himself, he went on to complete his half-finished book, which is now selling at Amazon and around the world. With your inner strength, spiritual foundation, and the support of caring friends like these, I know you can do at least as well, Karen!

I think it was the lentils! )(~ Actually, really don't so -- going to doc soon; maybe he can explain it.
It is kinda interresting really, to watch my neurons forge new pathways. I think new can see the improvement even over just the day or two. The brain is so intriguing!

Well, Karen, that is indeed a bummer. But you are fortunate that it is your speaking ability and not you language ability that has suffered. It is rather a young age for a stroke, I think. I am fortunate in that regard, no strokes for me or anyone in my family 3 generations that I know of. Keep at your music, and as many other activities as you can, which will be helpful, in part because if occupied you will have less time for distress over your problem, which will pass.

Karen:
Everyone at the Forum was stunned to hear of your recent health
problem and I was too. Sometimes it's hard to explain why something
happens, but with all of us thinking of you and sending our best thoughts
I'm sure you will be well very soon.
As far as lentils go, my middle name is "lentil." My wife has been making
lentil loaf and lentil soups for years and they, so far, have been a great
source of legume nourishment and fiber. It's hard to plan a really good
diet these days.....one that will guard against almost any ailment that
comes along, but with practice, a healthy diet becomes a habit after
awhile. My wife never fails to remind me to be conscious of the fact
that a good diet is made up of: low sodium, low fat, low sugar, and
HIGH fiber. If everyone could be aware of that, America would be better
off.
So, as we think of you and wish for your speedy recovery, please take
time to make sure that what you are eating (regularly, that is) is really
good for your personal health. With that in mind, I'll let you go for now.
But, I'll be back if I can think of anything else that would really help you.
Meanwhile, think about music, listen to music, compose music, mix music,
and finally..........live music. It is fast becoming recognized as the answer
and solution to the many problems in our world today.
Take care,
Jack

Hi Karen,
I wish you a speedy recovery! Let your music be a source of strength. You might find that you have new creative abilities as those new neural pathways become established. Take good care of yourself.

But it is great to see the progress in the time since you posted
I thought at the start there we would all have to start mixing up our words so you would understand them!
Maybe that is what happened to Yoda!

Dear everyone,
I re-read all these posts and wept copiously, because I realize how much I miss everyone on this forum -- I have been "away" basically since 2008 when my Mom died -- this time seems all in a fog. But this forum feels like yesterday to me, not a few years. It is as if my perception of time have become warped -- or just different. Those things and people -- who know who you are --that really make (or made) a big difference in my life are always in my eternal present not my past.
Re-reading my replies, I realize that it was not just my speech that was mess up!
My language -- grammar and syntax was all over the place!
I can remember -- barely -- how difficult it was to read, to compose, and even to dial numbers on the phone.
This forum has been a support, a teacher, and a inspiration.
My speech is still not where is was before the stroke, but it is much better. Thank you everyone, for praying and exhorting me to fight -- I had no choice but to fight.
So since that time, I did a presentation of May this year on composing for the Opera League, and sang an aria I wrote -- I had to practice speaking and singing the words over and over --even then I missed some. Just after the stroke, Colorado Vocal Ensemble performed two poems that I set to music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_xpNzz5Rqk&feature=player_detailpage), and just this month, my Requiem in memory of my mother, and other friends I have lost. Here is a snippet (raw video footage) of mv 3 and 4 -- careful, it comes in very LOUD! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXurD4R8uCQ&feature=player_detailpage
This forum, with it kindness, wisdom, and composition knowledge has been a singular support in musical activities. Bless you, every single person here. And Gary -- thank you for this forum, and for setting its tone of kindness and support. I hope to get back into being a more active member.
Love to all of you,
Karen

Dear Karen,
I wasn't a forum member at the time you left it.
I totally agree with you about the nature of this place.
I wish to thank you for your words.
And for your music too: how lucky you are to have your compositions
performed on stage!
To me there's no argument about digital or human renderings: the latter being what we all aim to at last, it doesn't matter how good your are at mocking out your work.
Sorry for being gramatically lame.

Hi Karen. I had dropped out of the forum before your original post so I didn't know about your stroke. I'm happy to see that it seems your recovery is going well. Congratulations on having your music played - I'm sure having the musical voice was a great help. Haven't had a chance to listen to anything in he Listening Room for a while but I'll make a special point of listening to the parts of your Requiem that you posted.

Karen,
I can empathize with you to some extent. I have had a severe flareup of Crohn's disease this year which as prevented me from composing (and much of anything else) since last fall. It seems that we're both on the mend now (finally got a drug that works for me) and continue our passion of music.
I believe that composers (artists in general) have an additional inner strength that non-creative types just don't possess, which helps get us through extremely difficult times such as these. Obviously your requiem demonstrates this. Such inner strength in its fabric and beauty. I haven't heard any of your compositions before, but this alone has left it's mark on me.
Cass
May you recover fully and continue to write and please multitudes with your inspired creations.
