Changing Instruments

I have only one score-track and with keyswitches I can get different sounds, like pizzicato, mutes, down-bows, etc....... But at certain spots I want the down-bows sound a bit more aggressive. For this I can add another instrument, namely Vlns1 Short Bows KS ag.

Normally I split that score-track in SONAR into multiple tracks, with notes for smooth legato playing, moderate aggressive playing (controlled by CC#1) and more fierce playing (the KS ag version controlled by velocity).

This makes reading the score in SONAR rather complicated, with those divided snippets of notes. So I wondered the following:

is it possible the give SONAR some instruction to play the instrument located at knob 2(that square on the left), or at knob 3 or 4.
or should I do this with channel switching, and if so, can I switch channels with some sort of instruction. Of course, then I have to assign those different instruments above to different channels.

So we haved one input-score-MIDI-track going into this ARIA thing with some sort of instruction to play where needed the instrument loaded at 2,3 or 4.

Please, just answer like: Yes, you can do that switching with the following instructions. Or of course, no way you can do that.

While you are thinking of a solution, I'll have a long walk.

If you keep channels equal to slots (slot 1, chan1, slot2->chan2)
you can use CC91 to modulate the reverb send

I think the only way to differentiate this is by MIDI channel. Now, you can have multiple MIDI channels within one Sonar track. Don't select a "master" channel for the track, and the notes will output on whatever channel each individual event is assigned to. They will (I think) show up as different colors on your PRV.

For me, i would just keep different instruments seperated out on different Sonar tracks. It would be a nightmare for me to keep track of different MIDI channels on the same track.

You listed two possible responses you'd like to hear, so I've chosen "no way you can do that."

But I'll leave one suggestion - "...at certain spots I want the down-bows sound a bit more aggressive. For this I can add another instrument..." Save finishing touches like that for after you've finished the composition. Keep your track assignments as simple as you can so it's not confusing while you write, then when you move into the production stage, add these layers and do what you want. At that point it's less confusing to have the track count going up.

And if you use Sonar's track folder option, your screen can stay much tidier and less confusing. Many tracks can end up taking up the room of one. Just open the folder when you need to get into a track for more editing.

As to the folder option in SONAR. I am just now beginning to work with that option and have a question as to how you, personally, use them.

Do you put all tracks for one instrument in each folder - MIDI, Synth, and Audio - or do you keep the Audio separate? I am tempted to put all similar MIDI and synth instrument tracks (Violins Lush, Violins short bows KS ag etc), except rendered audio tracks, into a single folder named for the instrument.

Any insight as to how you use folders would be appreciated.

That sounds good to me. I use folders once in awhile, and how I use them is on a per-project basis. When I'm just needing some things out of my way, but not totally hidden I'll drag them into a folder. Click the folder and whatever you have in there pops open. You can have both MIDI and audio, as you know.

When I know I'm Really done working with tracks, then I use the Track Manager ("M" on the computer keyboard) to archive and get them off the screen.

What you outlined sounds logical and tidy. It's really easy to use the folder option, just use 'em as you need 'em!

Sorry guys, still no setup from this side of the 'pond". Next wednesday I am going to Spain......... "that rain in Spain....." I hope not. It is not Shanghai, like Alan went to, only the first 2000 km's. We, my wife and I, benefit the "summer sale" and got the flight for only € 276,- (2 persons, return flight).

Let's hope that the volcano of Iceland doesn't ruin things.........
