View Full Version : Setup GigaStudio/Sequencer/Soundcard ?
My sound card: Terratec EWS88 MT 8 Audio in/out.
Sequencer: Cakewalk 9.03 Pro Audio
GigaStudio 96 (Vers. 2.0)
When GS is installed, 2 GS output midi drivers become visible. I gues I have to use one of them as output from Cakewalk to make GS say something.
When I make one of these GS-midi-drivers active in CW, CW will not play its audio. I get a very loud helicopter-like noise!!??
If I want to hear both Cakewalk and GigaStudio\'s audio output, how do I connect CW to GS? Is the audio signal from GS supposed to be ruted to CW or what.
Do I have to start CW thru the button in GS or does this not work! Could anyone please give an example of a working setup.

Hi Mole I have similar problems you can read my problem and see if the symptoms are the same. Is there anyone out there in Gigaworld
who can help mole and I with a typical Cakewalk and Gigastudio and Soundcard set up with more than 1 driver??
This is my situation
I have Cakewalk Pro Audio v9.03
Soundcard is Aardvark 24/96 with 6 drivers.(built in Mixer)also use for
midi(built in Interface)
Gigastudio 96 v2.01
Roland XP 30 Keyboard.
Alesis Active Monitor Speakers
Pentium 3- 450 MHZ-128ram
I have an outbox that came with my Aardvark sound card and the box
contains 4 microphone ins and at the back of the box I have the outs
which my speakers are connected to.
I took the output directly from my keyboard and routed it into the input
3left and 4right in my soundcard to be able to record the Midi to Audio.
What I am trying to do:
1.)Record from Midi to Wave(I have tried to record my midi to wave,
first I recorded a midi track in Cakewalk. Then I armed a new track and
set it up to record audio. When I hit record the Midi was playing
through my channel 1(Piano) through my external Midi Keyboard. After
the recording I indeed can see the Waveform, therefore it worked.
THE PROBLEM USING GIGASTUDIO WITH CAKEWALK TO CAPTURE MIDI
TO WAVE
I have my Gigastudio set up so that it uses my Aardvark Soundcard
Driver 1 and 2 Audio in/out in Gigastudio.
I have Cakewalk set up to use driver 3 and 4 for recording and playback.
I have tried two ways to transfer Midi to wave.
Method:1 I can open Cakewalk from within Gigastudio and then load a
sound in Gigastudio. I then took my completed Midi file and used the
Capture to Wave in Gigastudio, it asked me for the folder and I selected
it and it started recording. After recording I went into Cakewalk and
Imported the Audio file. When I opened the file I was not pleased. There
was no display of any waveform, Instead I got 2 parallell lines (flat lines)
and I got no Audio.
Method 2: I tried to record from within Cakewalk not using the Capture
to Wave in Gigastudio. I set the Midi track and set up a new track to
record the Audio with Drivers 3 and 4 as my recording and playback
master. I did exactly as the first time recording with my External
Keyboard instead using the sounds coming out of Nemesys Gigastudio
Port 1. After I recorded the Midi Track to the new Audio Track the same
thing appeared. Noa Audio or any sign of Waveforms, but when I go back
and select my external keyboard sounds and not use Gigastudio sounds
at all I can see the new Audio track has visible Waveforms in the clips
pane and can hear the new Audio track using the sounds from My
external Roland Keyboard.
Question:Why am I showing these Parallell lines in my clips pane , not
hearing anything at all.using Gigastudio??
Please help Mole and I

Let me tell you my set-up and maybe you can try that.
Aark20/20+
In Giga all channels set to Aark1,2
In Cakewalk 9 Playback and recording timing master set to Aark 1,2
In cakewalk/options/project
Clock tab - Source =Audio
Midi out tab - Midi sync =transmit midi start, continue...is checked
as well as Use Start Never Continue
Now, go to Options/midi devices and see which output port your giga is at (i.e. if it is first in the list then it is in Port 1, if it\'s second on the list then it\'s port 2)
After checking which port it is go back to Options/project/midi out tab
Make sure the Midi Output Port box is set to coordinate with the giga output port under Midi Devices (i.e. if your giga output port under Midi Devices is listed first then the Midi Output Port box under Option/Project must have a 1 listed in it)
Hope this helps!
If it\'s confusing write back.

you set your drivers 1 and 2 in Giga and

Honestly, It just works with 1 and 2 so I use it. It also works with 3,4 or 5,6. I just chose 1 and 2 for no good reason.
Sorry for the untechnical answer.
I too have heard of what your talking about but I just play around with different set-ups until it works then I keep it.
Have you tried the specific set-up in Cakewalk as I desribed before?

Dafrica,
BTW, I can\'t convert my midi to audio either using the internal way in cakewalk (setting up a new track, etc). I am able to do this with my soundblaster card but haven\'t figured out yet with my Aark 20/20+.
I have posted that question on this forum and time and time again people respond by saying just use the capture in GS.
So I started to use it with the Aark and it works fine.
I also wrote to Ben Mullins at Aardvark and he also said just use the GS capture.
Keep trying, you\'ll get it.
Like I said before, I use Aark 1,2 for Playback/Record Master in Cakewalk.
And under GS, I set it to channels Aark 1,2 for all.
Hope you get to the music soon!!
Cheers,
Steve

I\'ve found it always a bit flaky when using one soundcard for both. I would just get another card (Soundblaster) for the Giga and save yourself the hassles. There\'s no loss in quality b/c the SB is only for monitoring, when you capture to Wav it\'ll still sound the same. I have to say, Gigastudio 160 is SO MUCH MORE STABLE than Gigasampler. It works solid as a rock - I\'m in love with my setup. I had thought of using 2 computers (1 for each) but now I don\'t think I need to. My setup:
CW Pro Audio 9
Gigastudio 160
Gina (for Giga)
Wave 824 for CW Audio.
(I use the midi port on the 824).
It works like a champ. Use 2 channels on my board, one for each soundcard. This is the best way to go, as far as I\'m concerned. Hope that helps.

Hi Steve,(R&S Hanlon)
Thanks for your help. I will try to reconfigure ports tomorrow.
Are you able to see waveforms when you use GS tocapture to wave and hear Audio.?
Thanks

Hello dafrica and others here!
I think I have narrowed the problem down to a soundcard/GSIF problem. I had an old SoundBlaster 16 soundcard that I tried to use. I cant make GS use the SB! It can only see the EWS88 MT/D cards GSIF-Driver so I made CW talk thru Soundblaster and GS thru EWS88 MT/D. I use one of the HUBI drivers to send MIDI from CW to GS. This setup works OK for now , until they fix their bugs!!!!!!
Because of the very bad support from Nemesys and from Terratec, I will have to advise people to use an other combination than EWS88 MT/D and GigaStudio, unless offcourse they have 2 soundcards.(But who can afford that?)
Thanks for the great support from all the users off this newsgroup and thanks to Nothern Sound Source for making this newsgroup! Now I will try and make some music instead!!!!!!
