Re: Sinterklaas

Sinterklaas. How I miss it. I was brought up in Nederland. It made the beginning of december a wonderful time, steeped in mistique and tradition (e.g. Zwarte Piet visiting on dark stormy nights) and presents. More importantly, it prevented Christmas from being entirely polluted by commercialism and greed, leaving it free for Jesus, candles and Bach. I dislike Chistmas time in the UK. There is a constant culture clash in my household. I loathe Christmas crackers, which I hold as the symbol of the pollution of Christmas (that and F.C. in his Coca Cola suit).

I hope people in Nederland hang on to the tradition of Sinterklaas. I think there is an unfortunate trend for him and his sac of presents to be merged with Christmas, American style.

<font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana, Arial\">Well, I already bought some \"pepernoten\" a couple of times. Really love those things! Tradition or not, they should make those available to eat throughout whole year!

    Re: Sinterklaas

For people not really familiar with the Sinterklaas figure from Dutch traditions: I think the late Richard Harris in his role of professor Dumbledore in Harry Potter is the absolute prototypical Sinterklaas!
(disclaimer: opinion probably not shared by the other 16 million kids in my country...)

The real Sinterklaas is often hard to distinguish from impersonators:

Maarten, have you already put your shoe near the central heating?
Don\'t forget to put a carot in it for the Sint\'s horse...
