Claudio Abbado was one of my favorite conductors. The other, Simon Rattle.

Claudio was a conductor that was a definite "leader by example." He could get is players together and lead them to their goal of excellence in performance better than most conductors before or after him. He had a unique communication system besides his conducting hands; his facial expressions. His players also adored him regardless of whether it was a symphonic, operatic, or soloist performance.

Claudio Abbado will be missed greatly. He was a unique individual that was consumed by music and freely gave of his time and talent to make it a universal experience for both the players and audience. A great man, a great life and a great legacy. He will be remembered especially for his recordings of ALL of the Beethoven, Mahler and Bruckner Symphonies as well as numerous operatic offerings.

He was one of my special musical heroes.

What a coincidence Max. I am watching Claudio Abbado right now conducting Mahler's Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection." That Lucerne Orchestra is so great and such a great dichotomy of young and old.

    Cheers,

I was somewhere outside in the crowd.
I had never see my city like that evening.
    Sad and magical.

Very appropriate tribute and special symphonic selection.
