    "Mockingbirds," Wind Ensemble, Grade 3

"Mockingbirds" is my latest Grade 3 piece for wind ensemble. I aimed to suggest mockingbirds' mimicking song and their competitive cacophony through imitative phrases and countermelodies. Program note: In the U.S., the mockingbird is the state bird of Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, and Florida. They live throughout most of the U.S. and in parts of Canada and Mexico.

I created the piece in Finale with Garritan Personal Orchestra 4 and Garritan Concert & Marching Band 2 sounds.

Listen to "Mockingbirds" and follow the score here: https://youtu.be/n2tuoQtMIyA.

    Comments and reactions welcome.

    Thanks.

    Hi Art,

Fantastic piece, excellent for ensemble practice and detailed performance for you students.
Well rendered as weel: it sounds good in all sections. (Muted trumpets are a bit 'thin' though).

    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Art:

Lovely piece. Did you think to put this to a full orchestra? I just loved the piece, and apologize missing it, just listened this morning.

The best 3:13 one can spend with a bunch of mockingbirds.

Thank you, Ted and Fabio. Yes, I did think about setting this piece for orchestra. Still pondering the idea!

I love the sounds and the orchestratiion of this piece, everyone gets a chance to play something awesome. At the alto sax solo I thought you were going to include a slower, contrasting section, and do you want the grace notes to be started with the tongue or slurred?

Hi, Rod. Thanks for your comments. Do you mean the alto saxophone solo measures 75-78? I didn't write any grace notes there. If you mean the sixteenth triplet at the end of the solo, I wanted it to be articulated as written. Did you hear this as possibly differently?

Well, I checked out the Mockingbird as they are not native to the PNW. Long winded little guys.

I really like your Mockingbird piece. It's fun to listen to and I'm sure to play also. It has a modern feel to it but doesn't stray too far from traditional band repertoire.
