Kontakt Versus Giga -- Libraries, Sound Quality?

Dear all -- I\'m a new user getting back into music. I have an old copy of Giga 160 that I havn\'t used in years.

I\'m undecided about whether or not to invest in Giga or Kontakt, or both?

    1) Which Has the overall better sound quality between these samplers?

    2) Can you get similar piano and strings quality for each platform?

    3) Do you need a seperate PC for Giga?

    4) I have read good things about GPO -- is this only a Kontakt based library -- does Giga have an equivalanet?

    5) Which is better string sound -- GPO or GOS lite?

    6) Is giga\'s latency much better?

    Thanks

    1. It\'s a wash.

    2. Yes.

    3. According the Tascam the new version of Giga has rewire support so it may be possible to run it on a single PC. Kontakt can run either way.

    4. GPO uses a Kompakt player. Garritan mini Orchestral Strings is the closest equivalent in Giga (but then you\'re left with what to use for brass, winds and percussion.)

    5. If you\'re looking for a better string sound (in the Garritan libraries) perhaps look closely at the Advanced GOS. No loops = less synthy strings.

    6. Giga\'s latency is slightly better albeit barely discernable.

If a sample library has both giga and kontakt versions, most of the time the latter is better, since it\'s 16 bit v.s. 24 bit. If it\'s giga only, then the kontakt conversion usually sounds the same as the giga version.

    Yes.

Not neccessarily, but a dedicated Giga PC would likely avoid a lot of troubles.

Yes, but at the cost of less polyphony and no integretion with your host sequncing software.

I switched from Giga to Kontakt and had no desire to go back, but if you don\'t have to decide right now, I\'d suggest that you wait for Giga3 before making your decision.
