The Hanz Zimmer work desk for under $200 by ikea

Ergonomics revisited.

A few weeks ago we had a discussion on our work desks. I received several emails about my ikea contraption and I finally got around to taking decent pix of it.

http://home.mindspring.com/~edhamilton/id1.html

I was packing everything up for my move to Key West (temporary
and it was a good time to show what parts its made of and how it goes together.

The tops are from Ikea. They are part of their way too expensive office desk system but they can be often found in their \"as is\" room for cheap.
I paid $80 for both tops.

They form a perfect U with exactly the right amount of space for an 88 note controller.

To support the tops I use 2 quicklok stands that are for mixers. The legs are easily positioned and the height is easy to adjust.
Another quicklok keyboard stand is used for the controller.
It can get really low (lower than any other stand I found) so everything stays at very ergonomic heights.

The music stand is an editors desk from levenger.

12 space racks easily fit on either side of the controller. I used to have nice wooden ones on each side but since I am moving my rig often these days things are back in SKB ugly things. (but lighter!)

With my massive tendonitis issues I needed to get everything in front of me - with my wrists in line and supported.
This was the best solution I found.
It was only going to be temporary. Once I found I liked it and it really worked I always meant to have a permanent one made out of Corean but this rig just worked so well I never got around to it.

My room in key west ended up being a couple inches too narrow for this desk so I actually made a project out of building a custom top to fit the room out of 3/4 MDF.
Still on the quiklok stands.
It was really easy, super cheap and came out great.
Total cost was $18 for the MDF. Home Depot Cut it. and paint was $10.
I will get some pix of it if anyone is interested.

We all take our hands for granted.
I have been through Hell and back with tendonitis. Don\'t wait for the first signs of pain to seriously examine your work stations ergonomics.
By the time you FEEL the pain its already going to be an ordeal. One that you likely could avoid.

Email me at edhamilton@earthlink.net if you have any questions.

Best regards to all in this forum (it rules!)

Looks very cool Ed - I went Ikea too, different model, but I managed to find some 12U racks for about £80 each from which has exactly the same beach finish as the ikea tops and fit snugly underneath. I had a quote from a carpenter for about £2K for a similar layout, although that was for solid oak. Prefer your layout with the keyboard under the desk though.

Really impressive! Looks like the real deal to me. But, Ian, is it not difficult to play a keyboard standing behind a PC\'s keyboard? Maybe you can use a tablet that rolls out from under the Ikea top to place the small PC keyboard on. That way your controller keyboard would be closer to the player and less straining on the arms.

Thanks for tips guys.

I\'ve tried having the pc keyboard rolling out underneath in the past and found my back/shoulders ache more that way. I guess I use both pc keyboard and music keyboard about 50/50 so unless they\'re both built in to the same unit (ie a music keyboard with a pc keyboard built in) it\'s a compromise either way.

The ultimate would be something like this, but with the qwerty in the middle and no screen. (the screen\'s good for live use but no good for dual/tripple head PCs/Macs).

Maybe we should ask Openlabs if they\'d considering doing a controller only version of this rather than a full workstation.

Ian,

Beautiful setup.
No one would question the ikea desks in that room.

As to getting the controller keyboard under the desk......
I had to raise the table up a bit so I could get it to slide under....thus the quicklok mixer table stands.

I have received a couple emails asking about my monitors....
They are indeed Adam S3a\'s. I know they look bigger in the ads.
I am beyond obsessed with monitors and I extensively demoed everything (including unreleased prototypes) before drinking the adam coolaid.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about them.

Ian - killer room!

Ian,

Absolutely beautiful and very inspiring. Starting construction of new studio next week.

Ian, for that true \'Open Labs neko\' feel, just place your PC keyboard left on top of your controller keyboard, seems to me you have space enough. Problem solved.

I tried that a while back but it was too high up and too far to the left - even worse shoulder ache.

My music keyboard is alrady too high up but I can\'t fit it under the desk like Eds as it\'d mean rising everything including the computer monitors and then they\'d be blocking my speakers by a couple of inches. I can\'t rise the speakers as they\'re fixed into the walls.

In an ideal world the music keyboard would be sunk flush into the ikea desk and the qwerty keyboard sunk into the music keyboard exactly in the middle!

That wall of speakers is so impressive. Very pro-looking! Why did you decided to do it that way? And how\'s the result?

Thanks. The centre speaker\'s a custom design as it had to fit around a chimney breast so they made it a kind of shoehorn shape. As it\'s a small room the rear speakers double up as nearfields. Front speakers are all mounted on breezeblocks and Schroeder diffusers fitted around the outside.

The design was done by an acoustics specialist ESS - due to the angles on the wall and the slope of the ceiling above in theory there\'s no sweet spot - it sounds great anywhere in the room.
