    New G5's - Dual 2.5 available?

I just noticed on the Apple site http://www.apple.com/ that Apple is offering a Dual 2.5. Is this new or maybe I'm the last to get the news?

"Apple have just announced the new, completely dual-processor PowerMac G5 lineup. The models all sport an 8x SuperDrive, whilst new the dual-2.5GHz model also features an 'innovative liquid cooled heat sink,' available in July."

I have a Dual 1.8 on order now, Apple says it should ship within 6 days.
I don't know how much I will be able to do with it till I get more ram for it (256 standard) though it could be a while before I can buy more ram for it because I want to put the 1 gig sticks in it (dual 1.8 can only hold 4 gig ram) and they cost a lot.
Now I am hoping that DFD works well because I thing I will need it for 2 or 3 months.

I've been waiting for this to happen, so the dusl 2G would drop in price. And it did, even more than I expected!

But the new one has a 25% faster FSB, and LIQUID COOLING!!!

I may have to wait for the 3G (promised before year-end) to get the 2.5 at reduced cost... Or remind myself that this will go on forever - faster hardware, faster data transfer, etc.

Before you buym though ,kiddies, make sure your hardware will work on the new box - I will have to repurchase my 2408 PCI card - another $300, besides enough RAM (I want at least 2G, that adds $450 to the price from Apple) and a second serial drive. Apple offers the machine with 2 250G drives, but not with two smaller drives, so it's third party time again. Total cost, even with the $500 savings for a 2G box - $3500 minimum - if I doiotwith1 chips so I can upgrade RAM later, almost $4K.

Equivalent PC - about $2800 - sheesh! Wish I could find a DA I like as well as DP...

To throw in the PC side... DDR2 ram was just announced... sporting very high data thru-put, which is most important for audio... not so much the processor until it comes time to render...

actually as I understand it (what they said on TechTv for whatever that is worth), Apple promised the 3G about right now and some people think Apple might have dropped the ball on that one..the 2.5 might be all we get for a while. But time will tell...

An Apple marketing exec has publicly announced that the 3ghz G5, or a G5 Powerbook, will not be available anytime soon. They underestimated the new IBM fabrication process.

I wonder if we're nearing the ceiling in regards to clock speeds under the current design. A transistor can only be so small after all.

"I wonder if we're nearing the ceiling"

That is why Apple and AMD are pushing 64 bit chips, when OS's (Mac and Windows) are true 64 bit as well as the applications we will see better performance at lower clock speed.

The next "BIG" jump will be true 128 bit processors.
