    OT: A midi question

From what I can understand, there is two midi standards. General Midi 1 and General Midi 2.
Can anyone tell me the difference between the two?

Lets say you are trying to play a midi file which is in GM2 and you play it through a module, lets say a Roland which only supports GM1. Would the Roland be able to play it correctly?

Thanx in advance for any reply.

    Re: OT: A midi question

GM2 is GM1 with extended standards.

You can access more sounds, there are some more editing facilities available via midi controllers (instead of just by sysex), there's support for microtunings and a few other things.

You can read about it here:

If you play a GM2 file back in a GM1 machine it may sound different if the GM2 file uses the newer facilities, as the GM1 machine won't recognise the controller data.

On the other hand, just because a midi file was created on a GM2 machine doesn't mean it actually uses any GM2 features, so it might play back fine in a GM1 machine. You can always open the file in a list editor and see what's going on if you need to be sure.
