Absynth (2) is not your average bread-and-butter synth for ambient sounds. It can do the usual synth sounds too, although they'll take a bit more time and sometimes quite different ways of thinking, so you might be better off with an ordinary VA synth for those. Absynth really does shine for totally otherworldly sounds and ethereal textures though.

Any other good all-range ambient-like sounds VST instruments ?
Spectrasonics Atmosphere comes to mind. Also, Steinberg has recently released a surround pad synth called Embracer that's ought to be quite nice (though I haven't tried that one yet).

Spectrasonics would definitely be my first choice:
    Atmosphere, Distorted Reality II.
If you are in a hurry, check out XPhraze, it sets a mood for you and by adding a couple of ideas on the top you can come up with interesting pieces.

You could consider the ambient sampling CD "Drone Archeology". Numerical Sound web site does not document who uses this material - FYI it has been used in dozens of feature films by many of the film composers we all know. It was released 6 years ago and is still going (very) strong. More information and sound samples are available at my web site.

I use the M42-Nebula Synthesizer VSTi

Besides some basic pads and sweeps, the M42 includes some interesting gate and sample-and-hold effects synced to the host tempo (BPM) that (among other things) can create great rhythmic elements.

It is a fantastic library...very good for laying in a basic drone bed which inspires layering. Because the drones are so long, and they have significant variation, the usability of the material is very high. Provided you don't just spit them out and call it a done deal, it's a library you could use for years and not exhaust.

Absynth is also quite fantastic, as is Reaktor. I've not used Atmosphere, but Eric's products are always first class and extremely usable. No reason to think Atmosphere would be anything but great.
