Hello all,
does anyone know where I can find some theremin samples, or a virtual instrument that does a good job of imitating a theremin?
Thanks,
Christiaan

Spectrasonics Atmosphere, along with the loads of other sounds in the library, has a pretty cool theremin too. I've used on a couple tracks and like the sound. If that's really the only sound you are looking for, then Atmosphere is kind of an expensive way to get it but it includes a huge library of great synth pads, atmospheres, leads, basses, polysynths... Anyway, you might want to check it out.
The Arturia Moog Modular has a downloadable theremin patch thats very convincing..rich
Spook Keys is a lot of fun (and free). Windows only though.
Ditto on the Atmosphere sample. But there's a free one on the kvr site that isn't shabby. You'll need some good reverb with it, but you can make it ooze fairly easily,
I've got a friend with a theramin, slide whistles and a musical saw. To him discrete notes are for dweebs. Someday I'll have him over and track a few bars, if I ever have the need. I won't even think about ever sampling him though!

Just to get you started:

And i had a lot of fun with this http://www.theremin.info/download-file-5.html
The Virtual Theremin aims to mimic the Theremin using just a computer and a cheap web camera. It tracks the hands of a performer, using image processing techniques, around a picture of a Theremin superimposed on the video stream. The positions of the hands are then converted to sound that mimics the response of the Theremin.

Wow!
thanks for the great options. I was looking for a good virtual synth so I may look into Atmosphere. I was on the verge of buying a theremin, but as it is for 1 cue in a movie that I am doing on spec, I decided against it (but someday!).
For the time being, I may try to imitate it using the synths that came with Cubase.
Now, does anyone know where you can get samples of a Trautonium?
Thanks again,
Christiaan
I am using a free VST plugin called Gargoyle. You can get it here:

look under the free synts section. Great for strange horror scifi sounds
Here is an example of it used in a piece I created for a cartoon I am working on:
