    GPO review in Recording Musicien

    Hi!
I just bought the new issue of Recording Musicien in France and there are 6 pages of testing our favorite product : GPO.
I'll try to sumarize the article for you.
There is a great black and white photo of Gary with a harp with a little interview of him.
    I keep you in touch.
    Regards,
    Gil.

    Hi!
Sorry Styxx, I don't understand your sentence...
Anyway, here's a little review of the article :
It's a 6 pages long test made on a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz with 2Gb RAM. 15 screenshots containing GPO VST under Cubase SX 2, Ambience, General Options, Overture...

The title is "An orchestra to play", saying that Gary is turning the back on gigantism on introduction.

    - Usefull Applications : very complete software offer. Overture is simple but effective. Smartelectronix's Ambience reverb is excellent. Special positive review of the manual : "Teaching qualities of Gary, like its direction of the communication, appear there clearly."

    - An orchestra which sounds : all instruments are here, in the form of presets or multis. Even more with 2 harps and 4 keyboards. Of course, all techniques of each instruments are not here, and some instruments less current can be lacking (tuba Wagner, bugle, waterdrum, various granted gongs (exists but expensive banks). Partnership with VSL. About sound : of course, "super banks" sounds better. Multisampling at different levels sometimes lacking for GPO, some instruments miss samples (piccolo). Anyway, considering all parameters, GPO is great. Using a IR1 or Altiverb with GPO gives better illusion than Ambience. Orchestra is homogeneous, has excellent dynamics, is clear in high tones without aggressiveness, good definition in basses. GPO is general-purpose, integrates great in many styles, providing professional level. Playable.

    - Priority with interpretation : easy to play. From a keyboard, it's a rare thing, you have great dynamics with all instruments. Modulation is better than ten articulations from other banks. Crescendo from pianississimo to fortississimo made really easy and fluid. It's not the musician which have to adapt to GPO, but GPO that answers the play of the interpreter. Unforunately, Kontakt imposes that the options are common to all the instances.

    - Realism and detail : programmation is done for the music. Automatic variations are a good idea to add realism. Orchestra bass drum not as clear as timpani, but interesting to adjust.

    - Divide for better creating : smallest entity is the interpret. Simple but easy way (solo / Ens). Volumes and pans can be managed individually to divide interprets in space. But 2 disadvantages : first, it multiplies the breath : if 2 mics are used for an ensemble of 14 violins, 14 violins Ens -> 28 mics. Second disadvantage, polyphony : to play a note with 14 violins, it uses 2 voices of polyphony with an ensemble of 14 violins, but 28 voices of polyphony with 14 instruments Ens. But solutions exist : freeze in sequencer, working without reverb... Other banks must take example from GPO.

    - A complete offer : integrated usable software is another positive point. Not gadgets. Can work for a project from A to Z. Cubasis VST only for PC but Gary said for mac Cubase LE will be integrated in the next update. Templates are great. www.garritan.com is a fantastic mine of information.

    - Notation : simple with Finale, Overture, and Sibelius with midi controls. An update from Sibelius would be great. Gary said he's working with the notation companies for a better integration with GPO.

    - A new vision of the orchestra : Gary is a pioneer. After the midi harp, he didn't hesitate to reconsider the orchestra. GPO is democratic and complete. It's a new way, closer to music than programmation. From amateur to professional, it has a human dimension. Simplicity and the price could be worth with GPO the success which it deserves.

    Gary interview (excerpt) :
    -----------------------------

    What are you projects?
"Our next bank will be jazz/big band oriented. We're finishing Orchestral Strings 2 and working on many other banks. We're developping Stradivari Solo String which will innovate with its technology. We're doing intersting things with IRs and we have more surprises to come."

    What will be GPO updates?
"A free update should be available now. It will do streaming, will offer more patches, assignable controllers and player improvement. GPO Studio can capture audio from now on. A more advanced version is on work."

    The verdict :
    ---------------

    Pros :
    - Quality orchestra in 2.4Gb.
    - Musical quality.
    - Sound quality.
    - Ensemble (Ens) instruments.
    - Complete and autonomous offer (notation, playing, sampler, sequencer, reverb).
    - Direct playing privileged thanks to a clever programmation.
    - GPO Studio Host Program managing 8 instances of Kontakt.
    - VSL collaboration (upgrade).
    - Follow-up and dynamism of the project (tutorials, community, examples, contests...).
    - Bass drum fundamental modifiable.
    - Price

    Cons :
    - Notes not homogeneous in few presets.
    - Constraints of Kontakt player.
    - Native reverb uses lots of cpu.
    - No streaming.
    - Kontakt options affecting all instances.
    - Breath on multi Ens.
    - Quickly resources consuming.
    - No aftertouch.
    - Impossible to rename Kontakt instances in GPO Studio.
    - Impossible to use other controlers.

    In short :
Great success for this compact symphonic orchestra, well conceived and easy to use. It's a complete solution with an unbeatable price.

I'm sorry for this long review, but interesting things are here, positive (make it evolve) and negative (update the product).
    Regards,
    Gil.

To bad the reviews couldn't wait for the updates. The updates will solve a number of issues. They're great.
