Looks they aren't endorsing Kerry either.

Neither is Kerry's own hometown newspaper in Mass.

And Bush's hometown paper is endorsing Kerry.

Nope. But they barely touched on Kerry while they basically tore Bush a new a***ole.

Bush's hometown paper isn't endorsing him either. Kerry wins the newspaper endorsement race by far.

Kerry's hometown paper does a pretty good number on him too

Here's the clincher, in my view:

"Still, we are troubled by Bush's talk about a broad ``forward strategy of freedom'' to ``transform'' the Middle East. We believe it unwise to use our military to impose democracy on Arab countries, which would rather determine their own future. We fear this model of forced democracy will only fuel recruiting campaigns for terrorism.
And how about Iran and North Korea, who have considerably more advanced nuclear capabilities than Iraq ever had? Are we going to brashly send our overstretched military to war there too?"

This particular folly is more than reason enough not to re-elect.

The notion that one's hometown paper should automatically give them the endorsement based on loyalty or sentimentality is dubious to begin with...

So, basically what we have is groups of people (who in this case run newspapers) having opinions on who to vote for.

On this forum, we also have a group of people who have opinions on who to vote for.

The only real difference between the two is that the newspapers have the ability to reach and influence more people than forums like these.

Opinions. Our opinions, their opinions...just opinions...

A difference, I think, between a newspaper's editorial staff and ourselves:

The newspapers are charged with arguing on the basis of logic and the best interests of the community, and they are taking a pubic stand, having weighed the effect of this stance on their circulations rates and advertising revenues. These editorials may indicate that they've taken the temperature of their readers and advertisers, and at the very least feel that their position is a reasonable one in their community.

Actually, one would hope that we here also would be "arguing on the basis of logic."

By pointing out newspapers' consideration of advertising revenues as well as their taking "the temperature of their readers and advertisers" (which compromises somewhat the "basis of logic"---unless we're talking about commercial "logic"), you've managed to further illustrate my point that their endorsements are, in fact, just more opinions...

Editorials are by nature opinion pieces. Aren't they?
