The Composer Channel - status update

    Hey, guys.

I've just done an initial download of the songs available as of this morning and put together a spreadsheet to get the total run time of the material. There's currently 3 and a half hours, just a little shy of my initial goal of 4 hours of music before doing the first recording sessions with Charlie and Deirdre. We're almost there!

Show Programming Community Radio will ultimately have a number of stations/channels, so I've decided to use The Composer Channel for this one. I was going to call it The GPO Channel but quickly realized that it would have no meaning to most listeners - (bear in mind we're going for a wide slice of the general public, not just musicians). Of course, anywhere you encounter information about it, it'll have info explaining and promoting it as music from the GPO community, but stations need a quick and easily remembered tag so that people can tell their friends. And we want them to tell their friends!

Also, I've been thinking of various things to promote the station. Remember, contrary to what Kevin Costner told you, when it comes to the Internet, "If you build it, they won't know." People won't just "discover" it - they'll have to be told about it. Fortunately, 10 years in sales and marketing left me with at least a couple of skills in this area, and I plan on promoting the heck out of this. I'm currently working through some ideas for contests, giveaways and other promotional devices to let people know the station exists, get them excited and motivate them to tell their friends about it. There's a lot of good music and nice folks here, and the idea is to get you heard by as wide an audience as possible!

A common question is when it will launch. I have no fixed date, but to give you an idea, here's what remains to be done before I can take it live:
    1. Bring music content up to the 4 hour minimum
    2. Convert all files to common format and bandwidth
    3. Recording sessions with Deirdre and Charlie
    4. Assemble programs into production ready files
    5. Finalize server side details with my hosting folks
    6. Finish web pages to display program / song / bio / notes / etc.
    7. Stitch it all together and push the Do It button
After that, we're live, leaving steps 8, promote the heck out of it and 9,
continue to add new material and enhance the listener experience. At that point, as some here say, it's rinse and repeat.

That's where things are as of today. I've sent messages to a number of you for additional information I need to get your songs up, and there's still a lot of folks with great material who haven't responded with links to their music or permission to use it. So, let's get that music in, folks - I need to get these guys into the studio before the holiday schedule gets hold of them!

Deirdre has been very impressed with what she's been hearing, and given her music and record industry background, I have a great deal of respect for her ear when it comes to what's cool and what ain't. Needless to say, you guys fall into the Extremely Cool category...

Thanks again for all your work and enthusiasm for this project. I know I am not the only here who is terribly grateful for your efforts.

Hi Christopher - While I was at ACE/ASCAP today covering my own mistake, I discovered that Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf had its copyright protection restored in 1998.

Well, tomorrow, I will drop a cd in the mail to you, containing 7 piano pieces, 7 organ pieces, program note, brief bio, and permission. I am presuming you will not object to a revocable permisssion, in case I have the good fortune to be offered a contract of some sort?

I have plenty more, but at the moment, I am suffering from an acute attack of lapse of confidence.

What would you think of a version of When The Saints Go Marching In, that could be subtitled J. Arban in New Orleans? It seems to be well liked.

    Richard

Saints already added to cd, ready for mail!
