normal sustain and no sustain at same time?

hi guys, please excuse my newbieness. is it possible to have instruments with normal sustain (such as piano) within the same piece as instruments with no sustain (strings)? I tried doing so and loaded them on a different kontakt, but when i changed the sustain on one kontakt the other automatically switches.

hope i was clear and thanks in advance.

I always thought CC64 was on a per-channel basis. Hmm.

The way I do it is as follows (I'm doing this in Sonar which supports both DXi's and VSTi's):

    1. Load GPO as a DXi and put the Steinway (or whatever other instrument you want to have normal Sustain on it) in that particular Kontakt player.
    2. Load GPO as a VSTi and put your other instruments that need to use the sustain pedal for legato.

I know of no other way to do this since it is my understanding that regardless of the number of Kontakt players you have open, if they are ALL VSTi's, then the sustain/legato thing applies to ALL of them. That's why my particular workaround is to use a DXi as well as a VSTi.

The same trick works on the Mac in programs that use both Audio Units and VSTs (such as LIVE), or in the case of Digital Performer, Audio Units and VSTWrapper-hosted-VSTs. The new VSTWrapper 4.1 also allows you to use multiple outputs from GPO or other VSTis in DP4, a feature which is lacking in DP's AU support at this point.

thanks for the replies, but i'm using Pro Tools (until I get a better program for midi, any suggestions?). any hints for PT users? worse comes worse, i'll just bounce all the tracks that have normal sustain first then work on the other instruments.
