Need a "techno" library.. Absynth vs. Atmosphere

Once again, I'm considering (though more serious this time) purchasing a library or engine to add some more electronic type sounds into my compositions, which up to this point have been 100% orchestral. I'm probably leaning more towards low key stuff, not really loud, buzzy, in-your-face type stuff. Something that has a lot of great presets that I can use out of the box, and tweak them easily to modify them... and maybe even lets me create my own (though I don't know crap about soft synths). Think of how the soundtrack for The Hulk incorporated some electronic sounds without overpowering the orchestra..that was pretty nice. That's kinda the effect I'm going for.

So, any suggestions? I'm thinking it's gonna boil down to Absynth vs. Atmosphere, but if there's something else out there, feel free to suggest it. Otherwise, which would you recommend?

And I suppose while I'm on this topic, I may as well ask about electronic percussion as well. Stylus RMX? Stormdrum? Other? Looking for low key electronica type percussion.. and maybe a little heavier stuff here and there.

    Thanks!

Atmostphere hands down for ease of use and presets. Absynth is cool but the real power is if/when you dig in and create or edit your own sounds. Another really cool program from what I can tell is Ultra Sound - the new USB library. It's got the same engine as atmosphere and I think the demos are really cool. Haven't had the extra $$$ to buy it yet though so I don't know first hand, but I'll get it eventually.

    re: Mixing electronic with orchestra:

Atmosphere is really cool for this. I LOVE using antares Filter with atmostphere to really wack the sounds a bit further. Makes for some very cool unique textures. I'm doing a lot of this stuff right now and almost every track ends up with at least one instance of the following plugs:

    Atmostphere
    Stylus RMX
    Stormdrum
    Symphony of Voices
    EWQLSO and or GPO

Stuck on a planet - I'd go for Stylus and atmostphere

    My 2¢

Albino 2 too is a good bet! I recommend it a lot. You can try the demo here: http://www.robpapen.com/rpalbino.html

I used to like Absynth quite a bit, never updated to 2.0 since I started using Logic and it came with a wealth of synth stuff. Now they added Sculpture and it really hit the spot for me, it's oh so very cool!

Unfortunately, it's also proprietary to Logic so everyone else is out of luck.

I did like Absynth quite a lot, but I also did find it very processor intensive...I don't have Atmosphere but perhaps since it's sample based its engine runs more efficiently.

One more thing....there's this little known secret that I use, it's soo cool and sooo unique sounding that I almost find myself not really wanting to divulge its existence, but I would be doing a disservice to you if I didn't tell you about it.

It's called Crystal, comes in AU and VST, here's the kicker.....ready? It's free!!!

Check it out, it's really cool!

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll definitely check out Crystal.

I couldn't find "Ultra Sound" anywhere.. got a link?

I think he meant "Ultra Focus", not Ultra Sound. USB just released a large demo of this yesterday but download times are glacial at the moment.

I have both Ultra Focus and Atmosphere. They're very close. Ultra Focus comes with more sounds and waveforms than Atmosphere (9 gigs vs 3 or 4, corrrect me if I'm wrong) Atmosphere started out as a pad machine but I guess Eric figured he had much more than that on his hands. I think the patches that come with Atmosphere are a little cooler than Ultra Focus. I don'y have any time to make up my own so it could be that Ultra Focus has the potential.

Also by USB is X-Treme FX. So very, very cool. A ton of cutting edge, film inspired sound effects + Foley + ambiences + !!!!!! I absolutely love it!!!!!!!!

    All the very best,
