I have to echo SWL's comments on Peart. Everyone gets all gaga about his technique, but at the end of the day, his time just isn't that solid. This is particularly apparent on the live recordings.

Well, I would say the same of Carl Palmer. He has some chops, for sure, but his meter is TERRIBLE. And his solos (after 1972, anyway) tended to be pretty silly.

There are hundreds of great drummers out there but my personal all-around favorite is Bruford.

John Bonham, overrated? I respectfully disagree. He may not have the been the most technically proficient, but he had a sound, and a BIG one at that! I picked up the Led Zeppelin DVD last year, and was blown away by his playing, especially the early stuff. Bottome line, he was the heart, the driving force behind a very influencial band.

    Others I thought of:
    Tony Williams
Phil Collins (when he was into jazz fusion, mid 70s)
    Keith Moon
    Dave Ghrol
Steve Cobby (more of a drum programmer - Fila Brazilia - and an amazing one at that)
    Peter Erskine

    3- Christian Vander
    4- Bill Bruford

-127 Neil Peart (lots of hits but needs a calendar, not a metronome)

Oh, good call on Bun E. Not flashy but solid as a rock.

    How about this:

    Pierre van der Linden

Anyone who knows who he is wins a virtual teeshirt

Oh, and good lord! Has any one said Simon Phillips yet??
