    Freebies Thread

Welcome to the freebies thread! This is designed for cheapskates, cheats, and dirt-poor people like me. If you think this is a good idea, please post your links & requests for free instrument libraries. If you think this is a bad idea, simply ignore this thread and I'm sure it will disappear soon enough. I hope this helps, and I hope I haven't offended any developers & entrepreneurs out there.

I'll start by requesting a high quality GRAND PIANO sample (fully-functional, no demos please). The best one I've been able to find is the Steinway Model C by Soeren Bovbjerg [34 Mb].

I've also found a hybrid Steinway C / Peyel P190 by Nikko [132 Mb], it's a fully-functional demo, but it has a bit too much flange on it IMO.

    Anyone else care to share?

The general consensus for the best free piano is the one you find at http://www.soundcreationsinc.com/splendid/index.html which comes in a 136mb or 72mb download...

For my part I think it's a good idea. When making our music or whatever we do with our samples, we use the sounds that works for whatever we are doing at the moment. Sometimes what works is not the $$$$ sample lib, but rather stepping your cat and its tails and sampling that. I do own a number of expensive (or should I say 'ambitious') libraries but I'm still a freebie too, trying to get my hands on as many sounds I can. (I don't abuse animals to get sounds though )
A few of my all time favorites are sounds that sounds soo bad that you simply can NOT take them out of the mix once they're in there - they just sound too bad.

    Re: Freebies Thread

well for me, I have a few gigs of free instruments in the form of soundfont, and I love to use strings in my music... I actually was working on this great idea and when tried to use my strings, they were all detuned and I said to myself, "thats it. I deserve better strings." So I just happened to fall into the ultimate strings collection!!! Ahh yes, I cant wait till it comes

So freebees are cool at times.

lemme know if you want any specific instruments, I've found some great ones

WOW, you guys rawk! I grabbed the Splendid Piano, the NS drumkit and a few other miscellaneous bits. Talk about some worthwhile freebies--worth every hour spent downloading on my 56k dialup connection. I have two more requests that will make my rig complete:

    1. String ensemble / solo strings - Whaddaya say, RonC? I'm currently using "Cadenza Strings" by Joe Gunawan [13.5 Mb]. Very good but a little too much vibrato for some of my applications.

    2. Hammond B3 organ - I'm looking for something very aggressive, à la Tony Kaye (early Yes). At the moment I've got an organ collection sampled from an Oberheim OB-3 (I can look up the link if anyone's interested), but I'd like to find something more authentic.

P.S. Tomke, I'll decline the cat-tail-scream for now But now that you mention it, I've been trying to capture the elusive dog yaaawwwWWWnn that I get every morning at 5:45 am. Sampled in 24-bit/96 kHz. You'll be the first to know...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fantastic G-Town percussion. Sampled in a really nice ambient space, they blend pretty well with other libs that have sampled ambience (QLSO, SAM stuff, etc.).
