External USB drive for Giga libraries?

Is anyone using an external USB drive to store their sample library?
I need to add another HD, and was wondering if this is a way to go. Are USB transfer times up to the task of streaming? The drive I'm looking at is 250 Gig.

SATA is faster, and I prefer Firewire, but USB2 will do the job.

Thanks Jon. My internal HD is SATA.
Maybe I'll look into Firewire as well.

I've used PATA, SATA, and external USB 2.0. I haven't noticed any difference in any of them...Of course the faster the better, but the ext USB is very convenient for multiple installs.

So.... there is no end to the number of sample libraries that one can buy as long as you have exchangeable external hard drives and a big enough pocket book.

If you have an open PCI slot, I would suggest:

    - adding a FireWire 800 card (2x the speed of USB 2.0 or FW) ($69)
    - adding a FW 800 hard drive (e.g. LaCie)

    All LaCie Drives

LaCie sells what they call "Triple Interface" drives (FW400, FW800, USB 2):

Although I haven't yet installed it, I purchased the laCie FW800 card and the 1TB LaCie drive, which should "hold me" for awhile. Given I had a 250GB External Western Digital drive "poop out" on me (after the warranty expired), I also bought a warranty with my new drive from J&R.

For example, here is a LaCie 250GB Triple for US $ 260. You can extend the warranty for 3 years for $ 40 (LaCie has 1 year + 2 extra)
