Talking You Might be a musician if ....

·you walk around conducting the Verdi Requiem, Dvorak Requiem, Bruckner e-minor Mass, Beethoven 7, etc., and wonder why people are looking at you funny.
·you know Tchaikovsky's full name AND all its spellings.
·you have played more instruments than the average person can name.
·you own more in sheet music than in CDs
·you can define the difference between a sonata and a concerto.
·you know 101 jokes involving either violas, French horns, or percussionists.
·you know any jokes about players of any other specific instruments.
·your phone is unplugged for 2 hours or more a day so you can practice.
·you actually cheered on the marching band in high school.
·you have ever played anything by Bela Bartok.
    .you're not me.

Well, shucks, now, I did not cheer on the marching band in high school. Am I disqualified? I was busy playing in it.

Same here - it was hard to cheer with a trumpet planted on my face.

darn! i feel deprived.we never had a marching band at school.
but i did cheer at one of the performances by our school orchestra, when the music master's lectern collapsed.
which also lead to the end of my short career as a trainee contrabassist.

Don't be too jealous of marching band. In some areas of the country it has become a big impediment to good musicianship. In Kentucky, for instance, during football season (known as marching band season in KY) some band directors only rehears marching band music. So for half of the year everyone rehearses 8 and a half minutes of music. I wish I could have been in concert band only in high school. In college marching band is purely extra (does count as PE credit in KY). And, best of all, we play a different show almost every week. We are there for the football team. And the crowd enjoys it because we took it far less seriously. (Shouldn't mention singing the beer drinking song at one game with our flasks...or the one Homecoming where one of the tuba players puked on the field.... or... ok I'll stop).

And one more thing... Who doesn't like Bartok????? Surely he had a couple number ones back in 1987? Am I that out of touch? Didn't Blood Sweat and Tears cover Concerto for Orchestra? Oh wait, that was Satie's Gymnopedies.... hmmmm.

Oh and 2 hours? That's it? My Bassoon buddy used to get mad at his PARENTS if they called during his 3 or 4 hour per day practice sessions! Of course he was going to the North Carolina School of the Arts and Mr. Popkin can be very demanding of his students! (But is still one of the nicest guys I have met... he loved my Bassoon Concerto).

Ahhh,...a fellow Kentuckian, eh? I was raised in Louisville. Nice place. My band gigged across the whole state when I was in high school. No, it wasn't a marching band, it was a rock band...they didn't let electric guitar players in the marching band...they probably still don't...what's up with that?!.

Anyway, left in '81 for the golden hills of California.

Actually I am a Tennessean, but I lived in KY during my college years. I lived there long enough to know this joke:

What happened in the war between Kentucky and Indiana?

Indiana threw a stick of dynamite across the Ohio river, Kentucky lit it and threw it back!
