    Anyone know a GM VSTi?

    Hi -

I know this sounds kinda dumb, since most of the time, when using sequencers and the like, we like to stay as far away from the General MIDI stuff as possible, as it tends not to sound the best, but I am running tracktion and it doesn't recognize Quicktime MIDI player as an output. And GPO is the only sample library I have. Not that that is a bad thing, but I have no standard drum set or other stuff. I need something that is either really inexpensive or free.

I know next to nothing about VSTi's, so I am sure there is a freebie GM VST out there somewhere, I just don't have a clue where to look first.

    Any Help?

    Thanks all,

    Jerry

Alternatively you could download a free Soundfont Player (eg SFZ Soundfont Player) and then download free GM Soundfonts (eg Merlin) from Hammersound. I think you'd be surprised by the immense variety and quality of free soundfonts out there.

Thanks for the reply! I couldn't find 'Merlin' on Hammersound...do you know of a specific Website?

    Thanks again!

I looked too. I found the soundfont player - but I need Mac VSTs. I found some from the above resources, and I heartily thank you guys for your help!!

    Thanks a bunch!

Roland/Edirol has their "Hypercanvas" which works as a VST... but it's not as cheap as I'd like. Maybe you could find a good sale?

Check around for a used Roland SC-55 or SC-88 Sound Canvas module. It's external so it won't suck up any PC resources and may cost quite a bit LESS than the software!

    Thanks BlueMax!
I already have a Roland Mt-200 sound module / sequencer. It has the sounds I need, but the "midi in" port is loose and not working. This used to be my workhorse for a LOT of stuff before I was introduced into the world of software synths. I am running Tracktion for Mac - I just am looking for a simple vsti that will play either its own GM sounds, or play a soundfont that is mac compatible - it seems that VSTs are harder to find for Mac, yet Audio Units seem to be the growing thing for Mac. Tracktion doesn't support them, only VSTi (I assume that - maybe wrong)

Would there be any interest in a GPO-type of General MIDI VSTi?

Well, as Jerry pointed out, I think I might agree with him that a GPO-GM can be a useful thing (for quick mock-ups, auditioning, etc, before one gets around to doing the final serious mix/render).

Re: Anyone know a GM VSTi?

Sonar 4 comes with the TTS-1 GM module - really quite nice.

Or, if you want to look at it this way, the Cakewalk/Roland TTS-1 is a very nice but super-expensive GM soft synth that comes with a free audio/MIDI production program.

And if you've got cash to burn, check out EWQL Colossus. Gracious!
