Problem Solved - Gary, please notice

Since last Novermber or so, I have experienced numerous startup failures, with the error message "config. sys missing or corrupted" . This is really strange, because XP does not use the file. HP gave useless advice, suggesting a hard drive replacement, but Norton System Works and PC Doctor showed the hard drive to be okay, and disk scanning never showed data in bad sectors. At various times, I suspected probably everything on this machine. In summary: HP scanners ship with a cd containing among other things, an application called "Memories Disk Creator", which I installed simply because it was easy to install the whole package. Dumb move. The software has the capablility of causing startup problems, deleting software, creating system instablility. I removed it, thereby removing the problem. HP has a fix. Either I had installed the fix incorrectly, or the fix needs fixing! But since I don't need the application, it will not be on my machine.

I mention Gary because the problem first appeared while using GPO VST and Sonar and had corresponded with him on the matter.

Thanks for the warning. Often applications which run in the background could wreak havoc with audio computers. A few days ago I just installed an HP scanner. I'll be on the lookout in case problems happen. Thanks again.

To add to my post: I just plugged in the HP Scanjet 2300 c, (usb), no software installed, tried install hardware, since I think there is a driver for it from MS. There it was, missing config.sys etc again.

Fortunately, I keep very good backups, and was up and running again in about 15 minutes.

The scanner is headed for the garbage can. I just also remembered that a few years ago, my sister had a problem, not as bad, but was directly attributed to her HP scanner. I just talked to my favorite computer shop, where they were happy to get the information, and was informed "Oh, we just love HP, they give us lots of business".

I have an HP laserjet printer, which is great, so HP is not all bad! I just won't ever have an HP scanner again!

You don't need to use their software -- you can buy Vuescan instead from www.hamrick.com

Thanks Richard, I looked in my HP program folder, and sure enough memories disc creator was in there. This printer/scanner/copier is a just little over two months old. I deleted it! Thanks alot for the heads up.
This HP PSC 1350xi is really nice!
