adding a USB 2.0 PCI adapter card - help needed

I am adding an external hard drive to my five year old computer. the external drive recommends using a 2.0 USB. i do not have a USB connector available on this computer.

the motherboard is an ASUS CUSL2 which has 6 PCI slots. only the second slot is taken.

i bought a hi-speed USB 2.0 PCI adapter card that instructs me to mount it in any available PCI slot. i do not see any reference to whether or not the adapter card uses an IRQ.

does it make any difference which of the remaining 5 slots i use? if this card needs an IRQ, does it use a shared or not shared slot?

    anyone know the answers?

i would appreciate accurate advice to not destabilize the current system.
    thank you

Hi, the pci card will take an IRQ. Are you running Win XP on this? If so, it will be assigned a virtual IRQ when it enters windows.

You can always try different slots if you think there a conflict. Also, if you start getting clicks and pops the PCI buss might be overloaded. There are some PCI tweaking utilities on the net that let you manually configure the values for each item on the PCI buss.

You can also turn things like firewire (notsure if your machine would have it) and the printer port if your not using them. This frees up the buss for other things.

    scott
thank you for the reply. yes - window XP and cubase SX
i am not using a printer on this machine now.

is the window wizard smart enough to know if the card needs its own irq or shared irq?

my concern is that i don't disrupt the current stability

    thanks for the info
