freeware 24 bit wave editor plus vst host?

I'm currently using SIR with GigaStudio and Bos 291. Everything is in 24 bit format, EXCEPT the Soundburst VST Processor, a freeware program that some good folks here suggested, which I used to run SIR. The Processor accepts only 16 bit wave files.

So I'm having to convert wav files from GStudio to 16 bit format before the VST Processor recognizes them....a decidedly weak link in the chain.

Question: is there a freeware 24 bit wave editor with vst plugin capability (ie SIR compatible)? Or maybe a VST host like the Soundburst processor that accepts 24 bit wave files??

    Thanks all,

    JG

    Hey JG,

    Check Audacity:

    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/features

Definitely not at the same league as WaveLab, but it's free.

I have it! But it doesn't seem to like 24 bit wav files!! Also, it doesn't like my version of SIR.

    Thanks for the reply though.

well, Audacity goes up to 32 bit I believe, so you might want to try again.

Yes, it's accepting 24 bit files. You're right. But it doesn't work with SIR. Have you tried it with SIR? What happens?

For under $50 you can buy Goldwave which comes with free lifetime upgrades.
If you have Nero, it comes with an audio editor.

I think SIR is a DX instrument, so you'll be needing a DX compatible host.

    JG,

    Not a freeware, but nevertheless:

    http://www.steinbergcanada.com/shop/blowouts.html

VST5.1 (or beta 5.2) works quite well as a VST host, no surprise here.

WaveLab is decent wave editor with some MIDI capabilities.

You could pay for delivery, or you could visit 'em in Markham.

Another option might be CubaseLE, a stripped-down version of original Cubase SX. There is upgrade path from LE to SL or SX.

    Cheers,

PS. Herman, SIR is VST effect:
