Topic: Is there a limit to Kontakt instances?

Question Is there a limit to Kontakt instances?

I'm still getting acquainted with GPO, and was wondering if there is any limit to the instances of Kontakt that can be used in Sonar. I would like to open one or two (as needed) for every section and have empty slots for samples that may be needed later.

You're only limited by your hardware and/or sequencer.

But at 80+ meg per instance it eats up ram quickly.

Question Re: Is there a limit to Kontakt instances?

Does each instance use 80 MB RAM even if it's empty?

You betcha! Luckily, the GPO player only uses about 3-4 meg per instance.

Question Re: Is there a limit to Kontakt instances?

Oh - I guess I used the incorrect terminology. I am refering to the Kontakt player that came with GPO. So that player only uses 4 MB per instance?

I've had up to 12 instances of Kontakt loaded and it definitely doesn't use up that kind of RAM. I don't think they used any more than 100 MB all combined.

This made me a little confused, because I thought the RAM consumption of empty GPO or Kontakt instances seamed absolutely unrelevant to me. So I did the test: Here is are the Results on a Dual 1.25 GB Mac with 4 GB Ram, running Logic 7.1

After starting Logic Free RAM= 3.47 GB
After Loading 10 Instances of empty GPO players, Free RAM= 3.35 GB, this means 1.2 MB per instance.
After Loading 10 Instances of full (empty...)Kontakt, Free RAM = 3.32 GB, this means 1.5 MB per instance
I have trouble to beleive that on other configuration it can be that much more. If there are some doubts, I can post the screen shots. The test was made with the Apple Activity Monitor.

    Iwan,

I did the same basic test as you with a PC and came close to the same numbers but just a tiny bit more. Kontakt only used a tiny bit more than the player.
