    Question Are they taking me to the cleaners?

    You pros out there that have experience in upgrading I desperately need your advice.
    My system - Pen 4, 2.66 ghz. 1gig ram. 80 gig hd.
    I just called the techs that put this thing together and inquired about updating.
    Here's what we discussed for upgrade;

    Ram from 1 to 2 gigs. Installing two 2700 512's at $99.69 each = $200.
    New dual video card = $150
    Second 17" flat Monitor = $140
    Total = $490
    Another option discussed was upping the CPU speed from 2.66 to 2.80 = $250
    Total around = $740
    Seems steep considering and I haven’t included a new M-Audio sound card!. The ram seems to be outrageous or is that about right?
    Any serious advice is going to be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

    I'm showing:

    65 * 2 = $130 for the RAM
    $161 for the videocard
    $239 for a monitor

    So, yes, that's a good deal. Unless they're giving you old parts or something. I question the price of that monitor.

    That processor upgrade is too expensive if the socket is 478. I'm seeing it around $170.00, although for the performance, I don't think you should bother.

    Styxx,

    I'm not sure about the rest, but the ram sounds about right (depending on where you get it from). If you'd like, I can do some looking around for you. Let me know.

    Styxx,

    I agree the above responces... and I think that your RAM upgrade will be the single most important part, even if you leave everything else out for the time being.

    Styxx,

    Ram seems ok if we're talking two 512 chips.

    Sincerely,

    Thumbs up Re: Are they taking me to the cleaners?

    Hmmm, monitor and card can wait. I think the M-audio would be money best spent for now. Did I mention this includes intall?
    Ram it is then.
    Thanks

    Make sure they delete AOL while they're at it.

    How about from the Internet all together?
    I just talked to them again about the issue of unwanted applications or whatever running in the background. They said they would check it out. They also couldn't understand why I needed a different sound card. Not different I said, just professional and better suited to my needs.
