I also vote for using a brand new, original theme. It would be nice to have a sticky poll where all of the pieces were anonymous, but that might not be necessary. No matter who gets the biggest popular vote, everyone is the winner.

I don't have much time but it would be a good learning experience. I'd like to do it.

oh boy! my GPO just arrived yesterday [its incredible btw] and already there's a contest!

actually, all the ideas on this thread have been excellent. Save my computer undergoing a meltdown i dont think theres any outcome here that i wont thoroughly enjoy.

Then we somehow submit them anonymously, and the NSS users vote on the best. Yes, I guess you could vote for yourself, but my guess is there will be more people who don't participate that vote . . .

The winner would get eternal bragging rights . . . It's just for fun anyway . . .

I'd love to know what you think of such an idea
    Great idea!

There was a similar contest on Prairie Home Companion a few years ago, between Bill McGlaughlin and Peter Schickele. They didn't get to use GPO, however. Each composer got to pick four instruments for the OTHER composer to arrange for (from the local musician's union listing). Each arranged a Christmas hymn.

For Bill McGlaughlin, Schickele picked treble viol, theorbo, cornetto, and sackbut. For Peter Schickele, McGlaughlin picked koto, crumhorn, serpent, and musical saw.

You can hear the results at http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/p...23/index.shtml (scroll down to the 1:11:11 mark).

Hey Gary, which version of GPO is going to have theorbo?

    Re: An Orchestration Duel

Alright, I'm going to try to take some initiative . . .

For the first round of the Orchestration Duels, would anybody mind if I compose the first theme to be orchestrated? I won't participate, of course. Then anybody who wants to participate could e-mail me their MP3's ( sean@wizardwalk.com ). If you title it as your name, I could rename it and give it a number before uploading to my website ( www.wizardwalk.com ). I would keep a list of the numbers and authors. You could also use this service to email it to me (thanks Kanjika for the suggestion):

I just tested it, and it seems to work nicely.

The deadline could be sometime in April. Let me know what you think!

    Re: An Orchestration Duel

I'm not sure how many people have GOS, but I know not everyone does. It might be unfair for those who only have GPO to be compared to those with the full GOS, so what do people think about having two duels, those that use GPO and those that use GOS? I'd hate to prohibit the use of GOS altogether.
